Let's go shopping and see what Smartphone you can buy under Rs. 20,000
Last weeks rather popular guide to buying Smartphones under 15k was met with pretty good response, even though most of the comments were complaining about why certain non-Smartphones weren't included in the list. A few of them were Smartphones, but those weren't exactly under 15k, so that's why we have this sequel to the guide. Let's go shopping and see what Smartphone you can buy under Rs. 20,000.
Once again I'll define what Smartphones are to avoid confusion. Smartphones not phones that look smart or anything remotely similar to that. Smartphones are different from normal phones, in that they let you install third party applications to extend the functionality of the phone. This doesn't apply to phones with Java-only support like the Nokia Series 40 phones (6610, 7250, K700i and the type), but those with an actual operating system like SymbianOS Series 60, SymbianOS UIQ, Windows Mobile, PalmOS or Linux, for eg. Nokia 6600, Sagem myS-7, Motorola A780 etc. So a Nokia 6111 is not a Smartphone. Sony Ericsson W800i is not a Smartphone.
We'll start the list with Nokia like we usually do, because Nokia is the most popular brand on the market and they have more Smartphones than any other. It's not because we're getting paid by Nokia to promote them or anything. Most brands don't have more than one Smartphone in the market, i.e. Sony Ericsson which only has the P910i as of now, and some brands don't have a single Smartphone, i.e. Samsung.
Nokia 6681 (Rs. 14,500)
The non-3G alternative to the 6680 offers you tri-band GSM, HSCSD, GRPS as well as EDGE, but no video call feature like the 6680. The singular camera on the 6681 is 1.3 megapixels with flash, and the rest of the features are regular: Bluetooth, RS-MMC card support, SymbianOS Series 60, a standard 176x208 display, MP3/AAC playback etc. This is actually under 15k, so it should have been placed in that list, but the price we got the last time was a little higher.

Beware of buying the grey market products be it mobile phones or memory cards or any other electronic products. Although the prices in grey market are attractive but the stuff they sell is duplicate. Yes you have read right, all the grey market electronic stuff is duplicate. The product is made in unauthorized smaller factories in China and exported to India without labels. Then our great Indian seller thugs get the phones labelled and boxes made and sell to innocent people like you and me. Since I have come to know of this racket, I will tell to everyone. Also this grey market stuff goes bad after sometime and we blame the company for a bad product which they never made in the first place. All these companies have ruined their business by transferring their manufacturing technology in China. Chinese people have replicated everything. So if you are getting a memory card or mobile very cheap without bill, God can only help you with your duplicate goods purchase.

Well there I could see there r quite a few cocky guys around here as if they never made a spelling mistake, anyways Its a smartphone under 20000 bucks eventhough I will like to let everyone know about a smartphone thats lot cheaper. Krome has launched M900I Windows Edition Smartphone that costs around 12000 INR and it has all the functions except FM The MP3 is astonishing( guess better than many Nokia Cellphones) just add a few softwares and its rocking. It has pre- installed Windows Media Player v10 n u can play MPEG files after u have installed an appropriate SW.So need not waste ur hard earned money ( rather ur dad's money) just get it n have fun.

I beg to differ with the writer, 1) P910i is not under 20K; 2) The PDA phones are better then smartphones because PDA phones can run on 3rd party SWs whereas the same is not the case with Smart phones. For my info, I wish to know the OS on which most smartphones and PDAs run?

well many guys have problems with the speed of their Smartphones being very Slow, its very natural as the path of ur applications still leave a bit of ur ram used (as in Computers) so just goin to the task manager n killing the useless applications helps alot n also turning off the phone is recommended for all cell phones, atleast 5 to 10 minutes everyday. Seriously... helps alot. If u r really passionate bout ur cell phones n love ?m give it a little well deserved rest, its not like they can go on n on forever. So the punch-line is, its not a problem at all... hope it works for all...

There is a SE service station in Andheri East... To be precise, near Sangam Cinema (opp. PizzaHut) , Andheri-Kurla Road. You may take ur cell there and have it fixed. I suppose its a firmware problem and should be fixed with updated firmware.

It isn't! It's definately a "smart" phone (as in, it looks bloody smart) but it ain't a smart-phone, by the definition of the word.
Arjun Kartha | Bangalore | 04/02/06 10:34 PM | Report abuse
None of SE's phones are considered as smartphones because of the fact that they dont run on Symbian OS 60 series which most of the Nokia phones do run. To an end-user a smart-phone means u must be able to install applications and customize the phone. which is not quite possible in SE. Otherwise SE wud have no competetion on this earth.

Harsha | Hyderabad | 05/02/06 09:15 AM | Report abuse
I also wonder how the Sagem myS-7 can be cheaper than the Taiwanese Krome (I believe the original ODM is in Taiwan). That company (which also sells under the brand i-mate) controls more than half of the windows based smartphones supplies in the world, would have the best economies of scale advantages, and would hence be able to offer the best price to the end consumer. Is Sagem trying to do a 'Fiat' in India, trying to gain precious marketshare?
Vinay | Bangalore | 04/02/06 10:47 PM | Report abuse Reply
Vinay, imate makes hell of profit despite same/lower cost. best cost doesnt means they sell lowest also.same is about o2 also.
raju | delhi | 05/02/06 07:52 AM | Report abuse
just to correct Khrome is a indian brand but they pretend australian. imate is different brand in middle east n europe n same products r popular as O2 brand in asia. though product made by same company HTC-taiwan but brand preference is something like BMW-O2, Toyota(imate) & ambassador(krome) for them
raju | delhi | 05/02/06 07:57 AM | Report abuse
Yes this review is biased n probably funded by nokia-how about O2 Xphone II-one of best seller in smart phone.

Maybe we/you should make a distinction between smartphones and PDA phones as well. The A768i and the other Motorola phones, I believe have touch-screens, and work as PDAs as well once the flip is opened up. The experience of a touchscreen based interface is very different from a conventional 'smartphone' or any other phone for that matter. The PDA phones merit another 'best phones' listing altogether. And then there are the e-mail phones, like the Treo/Blackberry (the new BB is reall good to look at BTW). It would be both good and interesting to see if you can do a listing on how to choose the best phone that fits a primary purpose. For e.g. the Nokia 3230 is a good phone, and can retrieve your e-mail, but is really not a business phone. Neither is the N-GageQD which does everything that most other phones do too. Maybe we first categorize phones based on primary function like talk (entry level), colour screen phones (just above entry level), Gaming phones, MP3 phones, PDA phones, Business phones, etc, rather than on Price, which rarely (though important) is the deciding factor in purchasing a phone (By this yardstick, Sagem would have been the most popular choice across categories). And then pit the best phones in each category against each other for a shootout on certain parameters, like WiFi integration, easy text input and usability (most phones apart from SE and Nokes are crazy on this count), and other normal ones like talk time, battery time.
