Samsung YP-Z5Q

Samsung YP-Z5Q

Let's check how this player compares to many known MP3 players available in the market.

2 GB, Good sound quality, Great build, Good screen, Good interface, Neat navigation, USB 2.0, Picture slideshow, Custom backgrounds, Excellent battery life.

Custom USB connector, No voice recorder, No FM receiver, No video playback, Slightly expensive.

Performance

The player being a Samsung, I was expecting good sound quality but it surpassed my expectations with the crispiness of the music playback. The player has quality playback at par with the likes of MobiBlu and the iAudio. There are standard equalizer presets: Normal, Rock, R & B, House, Dance, Jazz, Classical, and Ballad. There are also these odd settings: 3D-Club, 3D-Stage, and 3D-Studio if you aren't satisfied with the 7 presets. The player lacks custom equalizer setting; it really wasn't needed with 10 settings to choose from though custom settings are always a good addition. There are the usual shuffle and replay functions as well.

The earphones of a DAP are most crucial factor and the ones bundled along with the YP-Z5 won't let you down. All highs and lows are produced very well; and I see no reason for you to buy a third party set.

The player is very user friendly and though it seems to be a Nano clone on the face of it, it features an intelligent navigation. The click-wheel is substituted with a combination of buttons and touch-sensitivity. The button navigation is placed as a square strip with curved edges within which lies a touch-sensitive five way D-pad below the screen. There is a volume controller on the right side to adjust volume and a hold slider on the top to lock the navigation. On the square button strip running around the touch pad, there is a top button for going backwards or out of menus. The other 3 buttons on the strip are previous track, next track, and a play/pause button that also doubles as a power On/Off button. The touchpad within is used for navigating up and down and selection happens with a center press.

The player claims a battery life of 35 hours that matches up for the amount of music hours it can carry. The battery was still left with juice even after heavy use over 2 days. Expect around 24 hours of playback easily though not continuous (I don't think there are any music freaks reading.) The player only charges via the USB cable, so you either have to own a PC or a laptop to get the player charged. You will have to get a USB into two-pin (electrical point) converter from some store if you don't own the mentioned/either.

The player features USB 2.0, so transfer speeds are fast. You can transfer files by the favorable drag-and-drop. The player has a custom USB port from the standard mini-USB port. So, basically you need to carry the cable along if you plan to trade music with your friends.

There is a reset button if at all the piece crashes, which never happened while I was using it though it can with a select few who are prone to bad things. The CD provided has software utility to update the firmware. If there is any software related problem, consider it solved with an update. Firmware updates are now part of a music player because these updates can add more support to the player like support for more audio formats.

Conclusion

The Samsung YP-Z5Q retails for Rs.11,490 but is available for around 8.5 to 9K on the street with a one-year-warranty. Now considering the player lacks features which should actually be default (at least in the Indian market) like voice recording and FM receiver it is a factor that might affect the sales. Lack of FM radio may be looked upon as a major con by several people who look for the same even in business phones worth 20 grand. But given its output quality, capacity, finish, aesthetics, and battery life, I would not mind recommending it to those looking for a good quality audio player. I would appreciate if Samsung gets a bit more aggressive on the pricing though.

i just bought samsung i-pod, its look is good but sound has little more bass rather than treble and it also lacks in user equiliser, so in my point of view customer should also consider creative player before buying samsung.

Better than IPod? You must be daydreaming. Ipod rocks. This Samsung player design seems a straight lift of Ipod!

you obviously haven't used certain players by creative, and btw, it is a known fact that ipod isn't the best when it comes to sound. (obviously i am keeping the price in mind, else leave alone high end companies, even a decent pair of canalphones can make a huge difference in sound)
