Samsung enjoys a lion's share in the mobile phone market; it ranks amongst the top five companies sharing 75% of the mobile phone market worldwide. While Nokia and Sony Ericsson try hard snatching each other's share for having the best phones in terms of functionality, a few like Samsung believe it's better to achieve market the other way round. Samsung along with another biggie Motorola believes mobile phones are meant to flaunt, to show off, and to boast of. Motorola just goes head on to make their mobiles stylish while Samsung realizes that style bundled with features is a better combo.

Now, it's been quite sometime that both Samsung and Motorola have been fighting over the slimmest phone crown. In this fight, both companies have released a number of slim phones to take the crown, one such phone is the SGH-D820 that we have with us today.

Bundle

Samsung SGH-D820
Stereo Handsfree
128 MB Trans Flash Card
USB Cable
TV Out Cable
Charger
Utility CD

We didn't get a box pack for the review so expect the above mentioned to change.

Design & Style

The D820 is a descendant of the D800; both were released around the same time. The D800 set the path for style and then the slim contest brought along the D820. The D820's dimensions stand as 95 x 51 x 15.2 mm which makes it 4mm thinner than its fore runner. The slimness of the phone carries into a graceful 99 grams making it really light. That's even though the phone is of a slider form factor. The phone unfortunately doesn't have any assistance to open the slider, so every time you slide open the phone you end up leaving traces on the screen. The D820 is better than the D800 because on the D800 you would have finger prints all over it, the result of a glossy finish unlike in the case of a D820 which has a matt finish.

Now, all this question of prints on the screen would have disappeared had there been a button to open the slide (Matrix style.) The keypad of the phone is hidden under the slider. The keypad is flat and still doesn't cause any irritation when it comes to typing out SMSs, making it user friendly (unlike the RAZR keypad.) The outer navigation of the phone is almost well-placed; with a very thin "C" (clear) button; Samsung still hasn't made any changes to that layout. Above the outer navigation is a large 256K TFT screen which does well in various lighting conditions, goes perfect with the style the phone flaunts.

Well, it's a nice phone and I can make my mind to buy it. But first of all, what was the price of it? If it's price is reasonable, then it could be a great deal with all these features of this phone.

er...samsung owns 75% of market share? Nokia and SE are fighting for better functionality phones? Ok first off, Nokia makes some of the worst phones these days. They are buggy, software is crap, and the service and support is atrocious. SE makes excellent phones (K750i case in point) but doesnt have the market share. Or the support that you expect. Finally, Nokia, Motorola and Samsung are the top 3 phone manufacturers in terms of market share and together own about 60%. Where do u get ur info on 75%?? why dont u post your source?? I cant believe people actually read inaccurate rubbish like this!!

Hi I bought this phone in April 2006 for Rs.14700/-. The key pad is not user friendly in the sense sending SMS is bit difficult. We have to use both the hands to slide/open the phone. I tried installing some Java programs but not able to do so. The phone has plenty of features and we can customize it to very minute level. Overall I like this phone.

It is very nice & slim Handset, I like it very much , He is saying that it's a feature HE has seen for the 1st time and NOT that it is the 1st time someone has implemented it. So whats the big deal. Not everyone has access to everything all the time. Even reviewers are humans like you n me. So chill.

"The phone has a TV out feature. This feature is something I've seen for the first time" dude, are you serious, i mean even a few samsung phones like the d600, along with the present day nokia n93, and not to mention a dozen others have a direct tv out feature. Ok, we know you aren't photogenic, and neither are you expected to be, but atleast be good at what you are doing, first that SLR error, there was another one in between and now here is another.

Well Well Well, A nice review. Should put in some more efforts in editing. As for the phone what to say. Consumer in India is always in a state of slumber. They accept whatever they are presented, especially when the name is a brand. Several nokia models nowadays are such trash that nokia should be sued for such gross negligence e.g. cdma 2112 in both reliance and tata. Many of you will agree that when u accidently drop your 6600 even from a height of 6 inches the color goes off or some other problem occurs. Now lets talk about SE. Yeah agree value for money phones feature rich and blah blah, but what about durability. Try using a SE and in about 6 months the set will start developing some or the other problem. Be it charging, or reception, or the joystick. What the co. do is repair it for you in about 15 days. Come on man wake up. Had it been UK the consumer till now would have thrown the co. out of the country. Let us form a group and start a campaign against such atrocities. Whoever agrees with me can mail me on shaileshjaria@gmail.com

This fone is not going to set sales chart on fire ! Only USP of this fone seems to be the SLIMNESS- but perhaps samsung has still to learn that ppl do not purchase a fone only for thinness- By Nov this should fall to 10k, perhaps then it would be a price worthy fone but still weighed down by lack of 1. Mem Exp card 2. FM Radio 3. Autofocus in cam. When one spends 14k this is minimum feature set expected Samsung !! Se is providing all this in 11k fone SE K-750.
