Another GTX 280 graces our labs. Let's see how it competes against the overclocked version from XFX.

High clock speeds, PhysX and CUDA, good warranty service

Power hungry, poor overclocker

In the previous review we saw the Zotac GTX 260 'Amp' Edition put on an impressive show and at times it was just behind the XFX GTX 280 'XXX' by few fps. The Zotac's version of the GTX 280 is again from the 'Amp Edition' line up. The core is clocked at a whopping 700MHz compared to the XFX whose core is just 670MHz. If those numbers are any indication, I expect better performance over the XFX GTX 280. The rest of the specs are the same and we'll take a look at it next.

Specifications

The Zotac GTX 280 'Amp' Edition has some really impressive clock speeds. The core is set to an amazing speed of 700MHz. What is so impressive about that you may ask? Well, considering the GTX 280 packs in 1.4 billion transistors using the 65nm fabrication process, the size of the die is quite big as compared to the ATI 48xx series and NVIDIA's very own G80 and G92 core. This increases the heat output quiet a bit as compared to a smaller fabrication process. In order to keep that in control, NVIDIA is forced to lower the clock speeds and also the shader clocks as compared to their '8' and '9' series counterparts. This is the highest clocked GTX 280 I've come across so far and I'm hoping it performs in the same way. At this core speed, it's a 16% performance increase right out of the box. The memory is clocked at 2300MHz giving you another 3% boost in performance. Well, the Zotac card looks really good on paper but could it give the XFX version a run for its money? I guess we'll know that once were done testing the card. But before that, let's take a look at the bundle and the card itself.

Off the topic: Techtree the new Ad system that you have implemented is as irritating as hell. Everytime I go to new page I have to close that ugly 1 inch thick Black banner. Please remove this system as soon as possible.

Quite agree. I use FF, i could remove the ad but not the black bar at the bottom. Any suggestion how to remove the "bottom page" ads in FF.
