Zotac 9800GT

Zotac 9800GT

Will the 9800GT bring something new to the table, or is it just old wine in a new bottle?

Single slot cooler, CUDA, PhysX and Hybrid Power support, Attractive pricing, DVI audio.

Nothing new to offer, core is still 65nm.

There were many rumors a couple of months back about a mid-range performance card that was supposed to replace the infamous 8800GT. Well it wasn't until just a few days back we started seeing announcements of the 9800GT from all of NVIDDIA's board partners.

Zotac is one of the first companies (the other being XFX)to have the 9800GT available for purchase to the Indian consumers and I must say I'm impressed with their promptness. The card that we have is their standard edition and adds Hybrid SLI, full CUDA and PhysX support and also DVI audio which is not that common. First let's check out the specifications and compare it with the competition.

Specification

The first thing you'll notice is that in spite of the card being the standard edition, the core is still clocked 10% higher than NVIDIA's reference clocks. That's a free performance boost right there.
The Zotac 9800GT uses the same G92 core seen on the previous '8' series cards like the 8800GT/GTS. This is essentially a 8800GT with a few minor tweaks built in.

It was rumored to be built using the new 55nm fabrication process, however the early batches of the 9800GT will still be fabricated on 65nm and later on we'll see the 55nm versions of this card. The memory is the same, 512MB GDDR3 and runs on a 256-bit memory bus. The stream processors also stay the same at 112 identical to the 8800GT. It will consume a max of 105W, so a good quality 450W power supply should be able to handle it with ease.
