Zotac 9300

This motherboard is for those who want a strong onboard solution that will deliver decent gaming performance and also offer good HD playback for an HTPC.

Onboard DX 10 support, Debug LED's, Power and Reset buttons, actively cooled Northbridge.

Positioning of the RAM and SATA ports could be better, A bit pricey, No ESATA port.

Finally, after a long wait, Hybrid SLI technology makes its way to the Intel platform in the form of a brand new chipset - the MCP7A, more commonly know as the 9300 and the 9400 (nForce 730i and 740i) series motherboards. These new chipsets from Nvidia are all set to raise the bar for integrated graphics and go head on with Intels G45 chipset.

These motherboards are targeted towards the budget conscious crowd who are looking for a strong onboard solution that will deliver decent gaming performance and more importantly offer good HD playback for an HTPC.

Given the performance of the 9400GT, this is a slightly scaled down version, so the performance should be decent enough. First things first, let's see what this new chipset has to offer in terms of features.

9300 Dissected

Starting with the CPU, the 9300 supports all Intel processors that have a FSB of 1333MHz or lower. That means the highest processor you can use is the QX9650. FSB higher than that is not supported since the audience being targeted is the gamer on a budget and he's not going to shell out 40K for a CPU for sure.

It does support PCI-E 2.0 interface for the graphics and a maximum of 4 PCI-E x1 slots. The chipset also supports DDR2-800 and DDR3-1333 dual channel memory which makes it a bit future proof. The rest of the specifications are pretty much standard nowadays like DVI/HDMI for video out, 7.1 channel audio, a maximum of 12 USB 2.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet LAN jack.

However, the highlight has got to be the onboard GPU, which is a 9300, a variant of the discrete card 9400GT. The only major difference between the 730i and the 740i (9300 and the 9400) is the slightly higher clocks on the 9400 which can be easily achieved by overclocking the onboard graphics. Below we have the comparison of the two different chipsets against the rest of the competition.

Both the onboard chipsets feature 16 stream processors and the 9300 comes with the core clocked at 450MHz and shaders at 1200MHz, whereas the 9400 has a 580MHz core and 1400MHz memory clock.

The image above shows the comparison against other chipsets from Intel and AMD. Now that we have a pretty good idea of what this chipset can do, let's check out the bundle Zotac offers.

I disagree that having the chipset cooled by a fan is "good". Most Intel PC's (G33/G35/G45) and AMD 790/780 are cooled passively. Having a fan on the chipset adds noise and not suited for HTPC. The CPU fan can be replaced with a bigger quiet fan heatsink but not the chipset fan,

exactly, apart from noise many people have had issues with chipset fan failures and replacements are hassles. Passively cooled is favored these days for obvious reasons and Chipset fan presence should be in NEGATIVE points.

I also agree. I found that an Enzotech pure forged copper heatsink actually managed temps better on my motherboard than the old fan.
