Yamaha CRW3200UX-VK

Yamaha’s latest drive includes new recording technologies, but is it really worth the price?

Relatively inexpensive, External, USB2.0, good extras, good buffer

Bulky

There has been an increased flow of external USB 2.0 compliant CD re-writers in the market with products from Liteon, Sony, Iomega etc. The latest addition to this list is Yamaha’s CRW3200UX-VK 24x10x40x External CD writer. To the jargon-challenged, an external piece that writes Cds at 24x, rewrites at 10x, and reads at 40x.

The new buzz, as it seems is to make products smaller and more powerful but the Yamaha 24X External doesn’t seem to on the same path. The writer is huge when compared to the previously tested external Sony writer/DVD-ROM combo drive. It looks like a normal drive just put in a thick plastic wrapper to make it look like an external drive. It features the now standard burn-proof, SmartBurn, SafeBurn, as termed by Yamaha, or whatever other buffer underrun protection technology you may choose to call it. It also supports CD-MRW, which is a format for writing data packets effectively being able to use your CD writer as a floppy drive. The writer also features a huge 8MB buffer and comes with Nero as part of its software package. Also provided are two power cables, an adapter, a USB cable, a blank and a high speed CD-RW. The manual provided is quite informative and useful.

For benchmarks we ran read/write tests of 650MB of data of different file sizes and types. The write test results were impressive and really good when compared to the Sony CRX85U, which is a 20X drive priced at Rs.30000. The drive uses CAV (Constant Angular Velocity) to read from CDs. It was able to reach an average read speed of 30.21X and did a peak of 40.53 at the end of the CD.

This drive is priced at Rs. 13,500, an amazingly cheap price for an external writer. Certainly recommended for the people who need to use a writer on the run.

For last 7 years i,am using the CRW3200UX and like it's easy use and fast handling of burning files. However my PC infacted of virus and lost the software to operate the burner. Unfortunately the CDROM can also not be found. Can the (Nero) software be downloaded from somewhere?
