An unfortunately-timed launch

Good build, single slot, good performance.

Expensive; the 9600GT makes it not worth buying

The last few months have been abuzz with activity on the graphics card front. It all started with the launch of the G92-based 8800GT in October last year, till last week, when the 9600GT was launched. Both have proven themselves as good overall performers, and have secured their respective positions in the PC gaming food chain.

Amidst all this chaos, Nvidia has also launched the 8800GS which, they said, is a slightly toned-down version of the 8800GT. XFX sent us a sample a few days back, and here's what we have to say about the 8800GS.

Specifications

When we saw the specifications for the 8800GS, our first impression was that it was a cut-down version of the 8800GTX, given that its memory interface and capacity is exactly half that of the GTX. Nvidia has assured us, though, that the 8800GS is based on the G92 core.

The XFX 8800GS Alpha Dog Edition comes in a neat package that includes the graphics card, power cable, DVI-D to VGA converter, S-Video cable, the driver disc, and a printed manual.
