X-Micro Bluetooth USB Dongle

X-Micro Bluetooth USB Dongle

Punit Lodaya, Oct 19, 2004 0000 hrs IST

Bluetooth is now one of the most spoken of technological terms. Though Bluetooth had a slow start, it is now really picking up

Large range, Compatible with most Bluetooth devices, Easy to use

Lack's USB extension cable, Availability could be a problem

Bluetooth is now one of the most spoken of technological terms. Though Bluetooth had a slow start, it is now really picking up, with more and more people opting for Bluetooth devices and Bluetooth-enabled computers. Today, we evaluate the X-Micro USB Dongle Class 1.

For those who do not know what's a Bluetooth USB Dongle? It is a USB powered Bluetooth-enabled Transceiver that lets other Bluetooth-enabled devices communicate with the computer to which it is attached.

The X-Micro USB Dongle Class 1 comes in a small square box, which also houses a software CD and a manual. The device itself is small and has a shape identical to a cigarette lighter. The Software CD contained the driver and a popular application known as WIDCOMM Bluetooth software. This application is not only used for configuring the Bluetooth Dongle, but also includes software for using the Bluetooth device.

Installation
Windows XP requires you to install Service Pack 1 before you can attach any Bluetooth device. Since it doesn't install any Bluetooth device automatically, the Micro USB Dongle had to be installed manually. The installation took place without much effort. Installing the WIDCOMM Bluetooth software is highly recommended, as it is one of the easiest ways to configure the device. After installing the application, you can start it immediately. Upon starting it up, the configuration wizard pops up, which will guide you step by step to configure the Dongle and the service you want to use with it. The software offers a variety of services like file transfer, Bluetooth LAN, Fax, Headset, etc.

Usage
We were able to configure the Dongle to work with a variety of Cell phones, headsets as well as another Bluetooth Dongle. It didn't seem to have any compatibility issue with cell phones like Nokia 3650, 7650, N-Gage and other Series 60 phones like Sony Ericsson T68, P800, P900 and P910. It was able to sync with Pocket PCs and Palmtops having Bluetooth support. It is also attuned to Printers having Bluetooth support like the HP DJ450 CI. Programs such as Nokia PC suite and Oxygen Phone manager also didn't have hiccups with this Bluetooth Dongle.

Performance
Since this is a Class 1 Bluetooth Dongle, it is supposed to have a range of 100 meters. But it only works in that range provided there are no obstructions or interferences. It was able to work properly up to 30 meters, but with lot of interference in between. Anything beyond that used to disconnect the Bluetooth device. But then even 30 meters is quite good enough for Bluetooth communication.

To check the transfer speed of the Bluetooth Dongle we transferred a file from a cell phone to a PC. We got an average speed of 25 KBps. Please keep in mind, the transfer speed depends upon a lot of factors such as the cell phones itself, interference, distance and obstruction. For a device such as a cell phone with a maximum memory of nearly 4 MB (Nokia Series 60 Phones), the whole data can be backed up in less than 3 minutes. We also configured the Jabra FreeSpeak BT250 to be used as a headset for the computer. We are able to hear the songs played in Winamp and the sound of being fragged in Quake 3 quite clearly. But again, the sound quality depends upon the factors mentioned above. There used to be a small amount of muting while moving around.

Conclusion
This USB Dongle sells for a street price of Rs. 1,600/- with a one-year warranty. It is quite cheap compared to other Class 1 USB Dongles, which sell for around Rs. 2000. This is a very useful device if you own a Bluetooth cell phone. The only thing which was missing from the package was the extension USB cable, which could have been helpful to people who don't like connecting the device to the back of their computer. Other than that, there is no problem with this Dongle. If you are the type of person who does his work using Bluetooth, then go for it. And if you don't need to be that far away from it, you can opt for Class 2 (20 meters range) or Class 3 (10 meters range) Dongles.

If your bluetooth dongle shows up as a BCM2045A under Other Devices in Device Manager, there?s an easier way to configure it without having to install its bulky driver from the CD you got. And if you didn?t receive a CD with your BCM2045A Bluetooth Dongle, this guide is definitely for you. Tested on: Windows XP Professional and Windows Vista Ultimate. First, connect the device to the computer via USB as usual. Now Windows will tell you installing the new hardware has failed and so on, not even Windows Update can resolve it. This is typical of Windows as it doesn?t have the required drivers for this particular Broadcom BCM2045A Device. Now right-click on My Computer and hit Manage. From the window that pops out, click Device Manager on the left side-pane. You must see the ?BCM2045A? written in it under the section ?Other Devices?. Right click that and hit Properties now. Go to the details tab and from the drop down menu that appears, select Hardware ID. You should see two lines that look like below: USBVID_0A5C&PID_2045&REV_0112 USBVID_0A5C&PID_2045 Right click the second one (Without the REV* thing) and select Copy. Now head to My Computer and under the Windows directory, enter the directory named INF (or inf) and locate the bth.ini file in it. Open the bth.ini file with your favorite text editor (I prefer the vanilla Notepad), and find the line called ?Device Section Start? in it. Now locate the name ?Broadcom? and under it, you?ll see a device of BCM2033 or so with a different Hardware ID. Just replace the 2033 with a 2045A and the 2033 in the Hardware ID line (Something like ?Transceiver= BthUsb, USBVID_0A5C&PID_2033?) with 2045 in place of 2033. Else, just erase the USB/VID line and paste the one you had earlier copied into the clipboard. Save the file and quit. Now replug the device and go to Device Manager again via My Computer - Manage. Find the BCM2045A again and right click and choose Update Driver. When Windows offers to search for drivers for the 2045A ask it to show you a list of known hardware to choose manually. Now look for Bluetooth Radio devices and under that look for Broadcom. Under Broadcom, choose the one that has 2045A (i.e, the one we edited. It may still show up as 2033, but still, select it!) And hit next. The devices will now be found, installed and configured. Thus, you dont need to install the crappy drivers from the CD unless you?re in love with it? Happy hacking. P.S. Next time, don?t buy a cheap hardware like this BCM2045A ones. Its better and easier to use a known and popular device even if they cost a few bucks extra. Or you can consider going in for Ubuntu OS rather.

Deepak, If you cell phone is bluetooth enabled then you can connect to a PC that has bluetooth enabled to transfer data. Turn on bluetooth on your mobile and let your laptop discover the device. Once this is done you can right click on any image or mp3 and select the bluetooth option. Select the destination device (your cellphone) to tranfer the data!!. Reply back if you need detailed information.

Maximum range of bluetooth is 10 Mtrs, we can not take the phone numbers and other things via bluetooth unless u send it or receive it.

by sheshu, chennai, on Feb 28, 2006 11:29 AM, Report abuse

Lazith, you have raised a good point. Bluetooth devices are susceptible to intrusion. Though not stealing or looking into your phonebook entries, a potential hacker can surely transfer a virus if you accidentally accept the data tranfered by him. Follow these 2 golden rules when using bluetooth: 1. Always turn off bluetooth when you are done with. Unless required, never leave in 'ON' or 'discoverable' in areas where you suspect can have a lot of bluetooth devices operating. 2. Only accept data transfered from trusted sources.

Yesterday I purchases Motorola SLVR which supports bluetooth. Now with the reading of the above article, I have cleared the doubt that a hardware is required. A doubt is now created as to the hardware that are requried apart from Class 1 USB Dongles. This needs clarification for PC users for ( to and fro ) transfer from Cell Phones. Any experts?

by RUSTOM IRANI, MUMBAI, on Mar 02, 2006 11:17 AM, Report abuse   Reply

Rustom, Your Bluetooth Dongle should come with drivers. Motorola Slvr models run on bluetooth version 1.2 that are suppported by most of the available dongles. If you have purchased you laptop or desktop PC recently, check if it is bluetooth enabled. If yes, then you don't require a dongle at all. Thanks Shiv

I was looking for some friends who use blue tooth for internet connection. I am from Kerala but not in one of those big towns. Yet Barati(Airtel) people have announced that they can give me an internet connection unlimited for just Rs.600 per month, and I will be getting a download speed of 30 to 40 Kbs persecond. I wish to know from which ISP you are getting connected and what is the result like? which(brand) mobile phone you are using and how you have made the cannections etc. I am asking this much from you because Airtel people do not have such a connection in their own office and they still want to promote it. You are also welcome for a detailed letter to me in my email address 'dr_rasheed@satyam.net.in'. You may be wondering why I am asking this much. It is because of the connection status that we get here in the dialup. It never goes above 37kb with best regards Dr, K, A Rasheed
