This is a sexy-looking portable drive with a performance to match

Gorgeous looks, decent performance, decent software

Pricey, no software CD, no carry pouch

We've reviewed quite a few external drives available in the market, but most of them are plain boring to look at; the Western Digital My Passport Elite 320GB is an exception. This time, it's this sleek and compact portable hard drive that came our way and we put it through our tests drill to find out if beauty is only skin deep.

Quick start guide

WD doesn't provide a software CD with this drive; the software is provided on the drive itself. Therefore, you need to back it up before you start using the drive; however, if something goes wrong, you can still download it from the WD site, but that may take a long time since the software is big. The provided 11-inch cable may be too short in some cases. The drive comes with just a USB cable and if your computer cannot power it up, then you may need to purchase a separate USB + Power Y cable. Since this is a premium product, it would have been better if WD would have provided a carry pouch with this drive.

fifteen days back I got Passport Essential (only black color was available) 250Gb for 5250/- after checking with fourteen stores. Are there other models of WD in small portable 250Gb capacity? Did i pay a high price?

I don't think it looks that great. The finish is simply silver. The LEDs are a nuisance if you ask me. The performance seems average. I don't care about a software CD (saving the environment by not providing a useless CD is more important) But I'd wait for something cheaper.
