The Drive

The My Passport Elite comes packed in a nice transparent plastic pack.

Dimensionally, the My Passport Elite is very much similar to the older Passport drives, but a few changes have been introduced in terms of appearance and features. True to its name, this drive sports an elite look. The drive we received had a casing with an aluminum-like luster, a color scheme named "Titanium." The drive is also available in three other color schemes -- Bronze, Westminister Blue, and Cherry Red.

The casing is unlike the normal Passport hard drive, which is glossy and easily catches fingerprints. The casing of the Elite has a smooth feel with a powder coating-like finish and does not catch fingerprints or dirt marks. The sides of the drive are glossy, adding a touch of style to its looks. It's a slim drive, with a thickness of just 1.5 cm and can be easily slipped into your pocket.

The front of the drive has a Mini USB port, protected by a sliding transparent polymer door, so that the port doesn't get clogged by dust.

Just beside the port, there is a row of four LEDs, which serve as activity indicators by lighting up from end to end. They also serve as a capacity gauge of sorts by lighting up from left to right as the drive gets filled up. However, they are rough indicators, with each of the four LEDs indicating about 25% of the drive capacity.

The drive comes preformatted with FAT32 for greater compatibility with different operating systems. But if you need to carry a file larger than 4 GB, you need to format it with NTFS. As stated earlier, the software is provided on the drive, and you need to back it up to avoid having to download it again -- in case you lose it.

The drive boasts a huge 320 GB capacity -- enough for just about every purpose. There is a WD Scorpio 320GB 5400 RPM laptop hard drive inside the enclosure. We've tested this drive before -- it exhibits commendable performance. However, the USB 2.0 interface is the bottleneck here, and the drive inside is not much of a factor.

fifteen days back I got Passport Essential (only black color was available) 250Gb for 5250/- after checking with fourteen stores. Are there other models of WD in small portable 250Gb capacity? Did i pay a high price?

I don't think it looks that great. The finish is simply silver. The LEDs are a nuisance if you ask me. The performance seems average. I don't care about a software CD (saving the environment by not providing a useless CD is more important) But I'd wait for something cheaper.
