PMR-based disks are fast becoming the norm for high performance seeking consumers. Here's your latest option.

16 MB buffer, Performance boosting features, Good performance, Silent.

Heats up a lot, Expensive.

We've been talking about the Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) technology ever since we reviewed the Seagate ST3750640AS; and by now, we all know that they are the 'in' thing. This is mainly due to the fact that they offer higher capacities than conventional drives, and perform a lot better as well. Initially, the high prices of these drives kept the average consumer away from it; but now that the technology has matured (by a small factor only), and prices have fallen by a fair margin, PMR disks are fast becoming the norm for consumers who demand high performance and don't mind paying a little premium for it.

Today, we've got a 750GB PMR-based hard drive from Western Digital (WD) - the Caviar 7500AAKS. Let's see what's on offer.

The Drive

The Caviar 7500AAKS drive can store up to 698GB of data (after formatting) and sports a 16 MB buffer.

The drive has a SATA interface with theoretical transfer speeds of up to 300 MB/s (Buffer to Host) and 972Mbits/s (Buffer to Disk). It spins at 7200 RPM with an average latency of 4.20 milliseconds.

It can withstand an operating shock of 65 G and a non-operating shock of 350 G, which is good as other 'standard' drives can endure a non-operating shock of only 250 G. Average noise levels are 28 dBA when idle, and 29-33 dBA in the seek mode.
