Western Digital 10EACS 1TB Hard Disk

Western Digital 10EACS 1TB Hard Disk

Sudeep Naik, Dec 20, 2007 1746 hrs IST

The last 1TB hard drive we had in our Labs turned out to be one of the fastest we've ever tested, is this one out-perform it?

Good performance, Silent operation, No Heat-related issues.

Small buffer for a 1 TB drive, Expensive.

The Drive

As with most drives these days, the WD 10EACS also features Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) technology. Click here to know more about PMR technology.

Western Digital 10EACS comes with a SATA interface [3 GB/s maximum]. It has 4 disks rotating at 5400rpm and uses 8 read/write heads and a 16 MB buffer. Yes, that's 5400 rpm and that's what we found out while testing it.

Compared to this, the Hitachi 7K1000 has 5 disks and 10 read/write head plus a generous 32 MB buffer.

The drive has an average latency of 5.6ms and a rated seek time of 8.9ms (read).

The WD10EACS is also part of the new 'Green Power' revolution of Western Digital. It uses superior power saving technology that can reduce up to 40% power consumption for the drive as compared to other drives.

Why don't they make it 7.2K rpm? It would then be a great performer. I'm unable to understand how they're able to get that kind of performance with 5400 rpm.

Under page 4 (specifications), the second level heading under electrical specs should be "Power Requirements", NOT "Current Requirements" :-)

LOL! Yeah. I thought it was current power requirements! :P Anyways, the correction as suggested will be appreciated.

WD10EACS 1 TB hard drive is available for $ 260 in USA- equivalent of Rs. 10000. Indian pricing of this product is ridiculous. and only fools can purchase this in India, i certainly would not do so, unless the price comes down to atleast 7-8k.

I totally agree- especially when the electrical supply distribution in India is rather a major cotributor for HDD failures and as such venturing for SUCH high capacity drives might lead to repenting when it fails
