Viewsonic VX2235WM 22

Sudeep Naik, Oct 11, 2006 1800 hrs IST

Viewsonic has launched a 22-inch wide screen monitor, the VX2235WM. Let's have a look.

22-inch screen, 5 ms response time, Excellent color reproduction, Sharp display, Good brightness and contrast.

Slight mismatch in HCR test, Expensive.

Features

The full 22-inch viewable ClearMotiv enhanced widescreen with 1680x1050 resolution has a 5ms response time and a viewing angle of around 170 degrees (V & H.) The 280-nit brightness and 700:1 contrast ratio provide rich and detailed images.

It supports a frequency range between 30-82kHz (H) and 50-85Hz (V).

The panel also features Dynamic Structure technology that involves special liquid crystal composition and pixel matrix for accelerated video response times.

The VX2235WM sports both DVI and VGA ports that ensure simplicity of configuration and connectivity across all platforms.

The two 2.5W built-in speakers give it complete multimedia capabilities well, almost; (no microphone.) The speakers sound pretty good for an integrated pair but don't expect a miracle. Like all Viewsonic monitors, the OSD is pretty simple and user-friendly.

Performance

After being reminded by my editor (a few times at least) to stop ogling and start reviewing, I gathered enough senses to run DisplayMate for running performance benchmarks ranging from Geometric pattern tests to the Color Reproduction test on the VX2235WM.

Although the monitor has both - the D-Sub and the DVI inputs, we ran the tests using the DVI signal, and that's what you should use for any monitor that has a DVI option.

The quality of the output was impeccable and having used a few Viewsonic monitors earlier, I knew the results wouldn't differ much (if at all they do.)

The screen geometry, brightness, and contrast levels were perfect with excellent color reproduction. The picture quality was sharp and the color reproduction was excellent without any bleeding of color. As with almost all LCDs, there was a slight mismatch of color in Red and Green bands in the Horizontal Color Registration test.

That was the only drawback in this otherwise excellent display. We played a few games and movies on it and thanks to its 5 ms response time, there was no evidence of any ghosting effect. The exhilaration of annihilating your enemies or driving a Lamborghini at break neck speed on a wide screen like this comes just about as close as you can get to the real thing (and it's safer too.)

Conclusion

The Viewsonic VX2235WM 22" Wide Screen LCD Monitor is available for Rs. 28,999/- with a 3-year warranty. Although the pricing IS a little too steep, it's mainly targeted towards gamers building High-end machines or those aiming to build a hi-performance HTPC. Either ways, the VX2235W will give you all that you want and some more but will burn a hole in your pocket.

I just bought this monitor today (at Costco) and I'm totally satisfied (no, THRILLED) with it. I can't say anything about the speakers, because I didn't hook them up. I've got an old 5.1 system that is great. I'd recomment this monitor to anyone.

Everybody screams about the high prices. I've imported stuff on my own, and once you start talking of bulky stuff like this, the freight goes up and the second is the duty itself. The duty charged is about 40% of invoice value, after adding airport fees, customs duty, demurrage (which is charged even if not incurred) and "Other reimbursements" (Which was about rs. 200 on a customs bill of Rs. 6000/-, the total invoice value was 23000/-). Air Freight in bulk rates would work out to about 40 dollars (Rs. 2000/-)a piece for something like this, I'm guessing. For Indian demand you would want to import smaller quantities, so that comes in by air - driving the per unit freight cost up. I find a good benchmark is to multiply the dollar value by about 70-80, and those that charge a lot more are overcharging, and those that charge less are about OK. Those who charge much less, should be checked. Remember that CPUs and hard disks come in as repair parts, and some of those are duty free.

customs duty on Comp hardware is nil... i.e. 0 %.... but to compensate the loses in local market.. they r charging additional duties.. they charge.. 16% for exice loss.. 4 % for sales tax loss.. n 2 % for educational cess duty.. so total of 22 % u gotta pay as duty .. while 12.5% of custom duty is waved off.. in addition u gotta pay some clearance charges around 500 n.. Rs/- 700 as local duty... for import of a monitor worth $390... VG2235wm.....

Excessively priced. Ideal price would have been 20-22k.

Sir Now that 22 inch wide is fast becoming standard every where- this shud be cheaper in india- i found similar Acer 22 inch 5ms monitor for US 335- i.e. eq. of Rs. 15410---why this viewsonic monitor is sooo expensive in India ? can somebody put some light!

by Taipan, Kangra, on Oct 11, 2006 10:38 PM, Report abuse   Reply

Because of Duties imposed by people who don't do their Duties.

by Max, Mumbai, on Oct 12, 2006 01:17 AM, Report abuse

Why do we keep blaming duties as the cause of high prices in India? What is the duty rate? Find out. Even if it is 20% that should contribute just about 3k max. Basically it is because of profiteering by middlemen.

by Emil, Mumbai, on Oct 12, 2006 10:05 AM, Report abuse

The customs duty is 60% and not 20 %. A 335 USD is equivalent to 15269.30 INR @ today's exchange rate of 45.58. 60% duty on that rupee price comes to 9161.58 INR. So the total would be 24430.88 INR.

The import duties levied by the govt. is 60% in case of electronic goods and IT products . This done so that the politicians can transport their worthless and lazy butts in BMWs and Mercs.

by Be Cool, Noida, on Oct 12, 2006 04:24 PM, Report abuse

do you really think its 60%

by maxwashere, bombay, on Oct 20, 2006 12:10 PM, Report abuse

Isn't 60% a bit toooo much !!!

by mukand, Bangalore, on Oct 22, 2006 07:19 PM, Report abuse

Who the hell said its 60 per cent??? Its around 14 per cent. If the tax was around 60 percent how can you explain the fact that many computer accessories like the hard drive costs almost similar?Even xbox 360 isn't that expensive in india compared to the outside market.Middle men eat a lot along with the political scumbags.lol!

It may be to dissuade the import of these assembled IT products and to save the home industry from becoming defunct/ loss-bearing!

by Varun, Jammu, on Oct 22, 2006 09:29 PM, Report abuse

What's the use? Revise the price an then maybe, we'll think of purchase.

We Indians are required to pay byxxery allowance- ( we have to pay both the computer companies to reap huge prifits off 'Sone ki Chiria'- India & the Indian government to feed its vast army of Politicians & BABUS. Hence we are happy to be charged 60% above global price.
