Viewsonic VA1703wb

Viewsonic VA1703wb

Sudeep Naik, Sep 19, 2007 1714 hrs IST

A 17-incher that provides the resolution of a 19-incher

Pros: Picture quality, Max resolution the same as that of a 19-inch monitor

Cons: Problems in the HCR test, no DVI-D connector, not as appealing as a 19-inch widescreener

The monitor is supported by a sturdy base - plastic again.

It has a 17-inch active matrix SXGA anti glare LCD that has a 8ms response time. It supports a maximum resolution of 1440x900. The contrast ratio is 500:1, and the maximum brightness is 250 cd/m2. The viewing angle is 160 degrees (horizontal and vertical).

VA1703wb sports a single D-Sub (VGA) input and a power input slot at the back. The power and OSD buttons are in the front - quite easy to reach and use.

vijayshimla, I am sorry to say but you are wrong! Many Pro Gamers still use CRT TV's. CRT is still the best option if you want the best possible Image Quality at a reasonable price and not spend a fortune on a high-end LCD. Regards

Actually, you're the one who's wrong. How many "Pro gamers" do you know? Pro gamers use large screens. Have you ever used a large (21" +) CRT? They have fuzzy, unclear text that causes eye strain, take up HUGE amounts of desk space, consume large amounts of power, give off lots of heat and even electro-magnetic radiation. A large LCD by contrast takes up much less desk space, has brilliant sharp text, consumes much less power, gives off no EMR, does not warm your room, and the high-end ones even come with built-in card readers and USB ports. They are also a lot more portable than CRTs that are MUCH smaller.

That used to be the case a long time ago, due to the lag which was very prevalent on the LCD screens. But since then technology has improved and the gaming scene has changed, but still people prefer 19 inchers to 17's...

Why don't we look at it from another point of view. CRT's are cheaper than LCDs. No doubt about that. Now, when a gamer's assembling a rig, he'd like to shave off as much money on peripherals like the monitor, to spend on other important parts, like the CPU, memory, and most importantly, the GFX (read as graphics) card. That's why even I went for a CRT, so that I could get a good GFX card. I had to assemble from scratch, as in, no other PC to take monitor, mouse or keyboard from. Heck, I even had to buy a UPS!
