Umax of late has been trying to penetrate the market with peripherals like LCD monitors, MP3 players and digicams, but its prime focus has always been on scanners. The previous scanner that we reviewed, the
Astra 5650, was impressive but for the price. Umax's latest offering, the Astra 7350, is targeted at high-end users requiring scans of high quality and precision. Let's see if this high-end scanner is worth its price.
Package and Specifications
This sturdily built scanner looks different when compared to most conventional scanners as its width and length are interchanged. It scans at a very high optical resolution of 3200 x 6400 dpi at 48-bit color using the standard RGB color CCD sensor, with the maximum scan resolution being 19200 x 19200 dpi. Operating via the USB 2.0 interface, the Astra 7350 scans a maximum area of 8.5"x11.7"(A4). 35 mm negatives can also be scanned using the additional black transparency cover provided. The scanner has five one-touch buttons that include Scan, Mail, Print, OCR and User Define for quick scans.
The software package includes Ulead Photo Express 4.0, ABBYY's FineReader 5.0 and Acrobat Reader 5.0; all these found in previous models as well.
Performance
The scanner was quick to warm up; it took a mere 8 seconds. We checked the accuracy and color reproduction of the scanner at various resolutions including 72, 150, 300, 600 and 1200 dpi. Text and images from newspapers scanned at the 72-150 dpi resolution was good enough with sharp color reproduction of black and white without any smudge or RGB grain presence. While the preview time was 12 seconds, the actual scan time was under 22 seconds.
High-resolution printouts, brochures and magazines were scanned at higher resolutions for more accurate results. Here, the resulting images were very impressive with sharp edges and color contrast. Preview time for most color images were under 30 seconds, while the actual transfer time was around the 3.5 minute mark for images scanned at 600 dpi. The color reproduction was satisfactory, but the sharpness was a bit on the lower side. However, it's not visible to the naked eye unless you zoom in.
Images scanned at 1200 dpi (file size of 183 MB) took a little less than 7 minutes. The results were ultra-sharp and the quality of colors reproduced was neat and one could use these images for printing poster or banner sized images. But there were, however, some areas for complaint. In certain areas of major black predominance, there was visible presence of RGB spots within the image.
The external black casing provided is meant to hold the 35 mm negatives, which is then placed on the flatbed of the scanner. This helps protect the negative as well. Images were quite convincing and can be used for enlargements.
When it came to the software bundled, the Ulead Photo Express 4.0 was very effective for processing images. Although ABBYY's FineReader is an award winning OCR software, it falls short when it comes to scan settings, unlike other software that come bundled with scanners from manufacturers like HP.
Conclusion
With a street price of Rs.17,500/- and a one-year warranty, this scanner is worth the money, but is not for home users. Production and media houses who are willing to compromise on brands like HP, Epson and Canon and settle for scanners that give you almost the same precision at faster speeds as well, should give this one a try.

I don't know if this is exactly what your looking for. It's an older model that was used on our MAC OS9 platform. It's a Umax Mirage ll A3 large format flatbed scanner. I am a regular user of UMAX scanners since 1998. I have an Astra 6850. I spend this huge amount because i'm so trust in UMAX. But some years back i have found that some models have a problem, an yellow horizontal line occured in the image scanned. So only i bought this 6850 (i didn't expect this problem in this costly scanner). But now, after an 8 months, i found 6850 also has the same problem as well. So I cann't use this scanner for my need. What should I do. Please do give me a solution. I cannt spend more money for buying a new scanner in this situation, because my firm is not a big one.
