The quest for an accurate image search

The quest for an accurate image search

A look at how search giants - Google, MSN and Yahoo perform to deliver better image search results.

Searching for images only using image search is no new news. We've all been utilizing the power of the search engine indexes to our benefit for a long time.

The first thing that Search engine giants flaunt about is the size of the index-"Search 121, 617, 892, 992 web pages". The "x" amount of billion trillion webpages that they can search for you, in other words the bigger the index the better they somehow are. This is similar to the cliche that bullies use to get an upper hand in a fight. Bigger muscles, bigger car, bigger TV, bigger babes with even bigger...err...you get the idea!

Cuil flaunting their search index prowess

Let's be real. No matter how large the search index grows in size, it is only as good as its ability to return the results you seek. In other words "Accuracy"; just how deep does one have to dig into one's vocabulary to get exact results?

It becomes even more difficult when one is searching for images/photos. There is no way to really define what type of image you are searching for except in words which results in the search engines throwing up a different result.

Luckily for us, search giants know the shortcoming of their search engines' capabilities and have been researching for a long time to overcome it. And we can see the results of smart (if not accurate) search.

Today we look at how search giants - Google, MSN and Yahoo - perform in their quest to deliver better image search results. We've added in Facesaerch (no not a spelling mistake) and Exalead to the list that has their own speciality.

The word we're searching for is "Paris"; this is to gauge what each search engine picks up and throws at us. As you may've already guessed, we got basically search results that can be broadly be categorized into two categories, the place Paris and the celebrity Paris Hilton. Let's see how each search engine lets us refine these and play around with our search results.

Please note, as much as I'm tempted to look into search engine hacks, this is not the scope of the article. We want to see how friendly the search engine is to display openly what it can do for the public. Search engine hacks are for the smarts who really know how to pull out every ounce of performance and functionality from a given product.
