The Panasonic PT-P1SDU

The Panasonic PT-P1SDU

Sudeep Naik, Jul 26, 2006 1728 hrs IST

The Panasonic PT-P1SDU perfectly fits the bill of what our counter parts in the fashion fraternity say, "Small is the new Big."

Compact, Portable, supports SD card operation without connecting it to a PC.

Non-uniform bright spots in some areas of the screen, Bleeding of color for text.

Analysis

The setup is very easy and takes very little time given the fact that the PT-P1SDU has a multitude of intuitive plug-and-play functions like the One-Touch Auto Setup with real-time Digital Keystone Correction. Its Speed Start function means that an image appears just five seconds after pressing the power button.

We ran DisplayMate to get a bearing on how well it performs when put through various test patterns. DisplayMate runs it through a series of test patterns to test everything from color, brightness, and contrast. The PT-P1SDU gives good color reproduction but some bleeding for text was observed. The text quality wasn't that great either. The contrast was pretty good too. Also, the horizontal and vertical color registration tests showed positive results.

An interesting observation during testing was the formation of non-uniform bright spots in some areas of the screen which was more prominent for monochrome or grayscale images.

Apart from the test we also ran a few Power Point presentations, videos, and still picture slide shows. The presentations were a smooth sailing that looked just about the same as they would on a PC monitor. The video quality was decent enough (mind you, the PT-P1SDU is not exactly meant for entertainment.) But the JPEG slides stole the show; the PT-P1SDU gave its best output in this area.

A very distinct and certainly a strong point for the PT-P1SDU is that it supports an SC card operation without connecting it to a PC. All it requires is the SD card to be inserted into the slot provided on the left side of the projector.

The full function remote that comes along with the projector has neatly placed buttons allowing you easy access to any function or setting for the projector.

When a presentation is completed, a Direct Power Off function allows the user to immediately unplug the projector while the cooling fan keeps operating until the lamp is cooled. To prevent theft, the unit is outfitted with security features including an SD card key and user control lock.

Conclusion

I'd say the Panasonic PT-P1SDU is one of the lightest and smallest projectors available in the market today. The output quality is pretty good considering that it is available for Rs. 65,000 that makes it one of the cheapest options as well. The PT-P1SDU is for those who are on-the-move constantly and are required to present their ideas anywhere, anytime, anyhow (reads with or without a PC or laptop.)

Considering the price, I guess many of us might be tempted to get one for their home entertainment system, but I would strongly suggest you look for other options.

All in all, the Panasonic PT-P1SDU is a very fair buy taking into account the features, performance, and more importantly, the cost. It sure projects a pretty picture.

Perhaps I am dumb and the answer is obvious. It isn't obvious to me though. What kind of files can run directly off the SD card?

Nope! You are not dumb! Atleast two can not be dumb at a time because the answer is not obvious to me too.

I shudder to "remember those days when presentation meant hundreds of transparencies with hand drawn diagrams, charts, and text." We this seems pretty slim, petite, efficient and economical.
