The Evolution of GTA: Girls, Guns, and Gore -- I

The Evolution of GTA: Girls, Guns, and Gore -- I

The series has "all the qualities of a hit"

GTA 3
I remember playing GTA 3 for the first time; I thought it looked very dull. Surprisingly, the look worked for me, and it gave the game a very Film Noir type of feel. This was the first 3D game in the series; the first GTA game with a 3D world had quite an impact -- it was the best seller in 2001, and was first released for the PS2 and later ported to PC.

The protagonist is a nameless guy; the game takes place in Liberty City. It starts off with the player's girlfriend betraying him in a bank heist. The player has to then do petty jobs and crimes to move up the crime ladder so he can get even with his ex. The player never speaks a word in the entire game -- all he does is do hand gestures to communicate, and that, very rarely. The game was, again, mission-based, but due to the 3D engine, the city could be explored better and the missions were more detailed.

The player could use a variety of guns and drive almost anything. He could sprint but couldn't swim (I remember drowning several times while performing jumps and stunts). He was particularly good at hand-to-hand combat and could really give a beating.

The HUD consisted of a map and compass as well as a rating system. The rating would let the player know how "Wanted" he was. Depending on that, the police or FBI would encounter you. You had rocket launchers, flame-throwers, and much more to defend yourself against the authorities. The game being very non-linear, you could spend hours doing side missions -- there was immense freedom to roam around the world and explore as well as do story missions.

There was a major controversy with GTA 3: many TV stations showed the violence and the resulting reward system. No matter what the reason, GTA 3 still reigns as the GTA game that started it all.

This is just Part 1 of our feature; next time, I'll explore the other games in the series (like Vice City, San Andreas, and GTA 4).

Great journey by navneet taking us through the evolution of GTA to it becoming the GOLIATH of GAMES. Evident from an unprecedented buzz and excitement generated for GTA 4. It only proves the mass mania it has managed to generate over the years with its crisp characterization and immersive story telling. Just waiting with bated breath to get my hands on the next GTA venture coming on the X-BOX 360.
