The Technology
So, here's what I felt about the phone, having used it for quite some time. Well, as much as it awed me it got me heartbroken too. The interface of the iPhone is too good to be true. It has a complete touch-interface with interactive touch-sensitivity -- and you just can't have enough of it. Just a few buttons on the phone: the Power ON/OFF button, volume control, and finally, the only button on the face of the phone. It does just one thing: it gets you back to the main screen (as the "Windows + D" combination on your PC keyboard gets you back to the desktop).
There are lots of patented technologies involved that make the touch-sensitivity of the iPhone so great. It has Multi-touch, Accelerometer, and Proximity Sensor. I'll tell you what each of these does.
The Multi-touch of the iPhone can detect more than a single touch at a time on its screen. The technology involves layers of sensitivity. There's the touch panel and an electric field below it. Above the touch panel is a protective shield, and under the electric field is the LCD. The touch panel detects the touches, and the electrical field sends out electric signals, which are eventually processed to to provide the actual output. This sort of a thing is still under development from like "Minority Report" times for actual desktop replacements. The skill used to actually make this happen has taken a lot of development. Coming back to the iPhone: it can detect multiple touches. This smart tech doesn't end here; it's made even smarter with another technology -- the Accelerometer.
The Accelerometer detects the rate at which you move your finger across the screen. It's something very similar to mouse acceleration on your PC. The moment you drag your finger across the screen at a certain speed, the OS detects the speed and actually travels almost that quickly through the many frames. You slide your finger across the screen slowly, and it moves just a couple of frames. Slide it faster, and it moves through at least ten frames: Faster equals more frames and vice versa. Now that's smart!
The screen also has a proximity sensor. This smart technology detects if the screen is being approached by your finger or face. The moment you take the phone close to your face while on a call, it automatically sends the screen into standby; and the moment you take it off your ear, the screen again lights up. A brilliant way to save battery. If that weren't enough, the accelerometer even detects which way you're holding the phone and automatically changes the orientation of the screen.
There's a spring unit in the phone, which supports the Accelerometer. It consists of 4 springs on each side and a piece of solid in the center. The solid puts weight onto the spring on whichever side is down. Gravity is what basically helps (if you couldn't figure out what I just said). Of course, getting used to all this will take time, but -- overall -- it'll expose you to an all-new experience you never knew you could have from a phone.
Don't take your eyes off the screen yet: there's still this to talk about: the "other" reality.

THIS MSG FOR ALL WHO CRITICIZE IPHONE. The loopholes that iphone has will disappear for sure by future updates of the fimware. Issues of bluetooth, sms forwards, quickoffice compatibility, etc. all these faults will be vanished after the future updates of firmware. Iphone will be a complete phone by the end of this year. What an interface of home screen, messaging, safari, email, camera clarity, above all IPOD , awesome third party softwares, dial (mute, speakers, hold, merg, etc.). Apple iphone is good and a unique experience but with many drawbacks, such as: 1) Messages cannot be forwarded and are grouped according to sender 2) Bluetooth is only for Headphone and there is no way of connectivity other than a cable connectivity with PC or other Phones 3) Calls cannot be picked directly till u slide the key. Not even on Headphone. This means if u are driving, its difficult to pick up a call 4) U cannot set any other ringtones, other than itunes set by apple. nor u can download ringtones from Apple site, if ur phone is unlocked, as this becomes illegal 5) U cannot upgrade ur phone through Apple website (if it is a unlocked/unbilled phone) as apple may lock it again if u connect to there website 6) Settings wizard is very confusing 7) Sound quality very very poor 8) Difficult to get accesories in India 9) Very Expensive phone with huge price difference (US price Approx. INR 13000/- while it is sold at INR 25000/- in India) and very less resale value 10) Time to get licensed unlock phone. Apple plans to lauch the same on 24th March 2008 in India

Iphone is a gr8 product in cell phone market.. thats it.. PERIOD... it doesnt even come close to be called as a smartphone. As always with Apple, its just marketing HYPE. It has a very cool and a very thoughtful UI design. Someone who likes a sexy looking and colorful phone, then iphone is the way to go. But for someone who cares function over looks, then N95 is the way to go. Nokia knows the business and they know how to make a real smartphone. As a simple scenario, how many of you can dail a number on an iphone without looking at it while driving?? Apple makes very good UI products, but not fully functional products. BTW, I have used both N95 (series 1) and iPhone, now I am looking forward to buy N95-8GB version. WTG NOKIA....

Dream on about it 'ruling the arena'. This is a phone designed for VERY RICH non-smartphone users-those who stuck to basic voice/SMS because they found existing phones too complicated. Very Rich considering it's priced similar to an N95 while lacking the most basic features that we take for granted on even low end phones (no copy pasting text, no MMS, no fwding SMS, no video, NO SETTING A MUSIC FILE AS A RINGTONE!!!! WTF??) Fans of Nokia/SE would rather wait for them to release Symbian devices with touchscreens. Also don't forget the locked in business model Apple uses. In India we're used to buying unlocked handsets where we can switch operators and plans easily. Anyway..if you're a rich kid with more money than sense, who's stopping you from getting one.

I think you should use the device once. More features does not mean a better phone. Even i was apprehensive when i read about the phone, but after using it once, its just a great experience. Everything works just as they say and the photo, video and youtube viewer are very interactive.

hey i agree with all those who are against iphone or its less features points......but yaaron..think it this way... it was after all a first try from a company...just wait and watch and get ready for 2nd generation 1 phones...after a few experinced years iphone will definately do video ..forwarding sms...etc etrc bluettooth...etc etc etc......... its too early to say..yah as for now...those who usze smart phone will find it featureLESS...!!!1...isnt it right??????????
