Spore Creature Creator: A sneak peek

Will Wright's Magnum Opus aka Spore is finally nearing completion. Spore is a game about evolution, a game that makes you the creator and editor for an entire ecosystem. Will Wright is famous for his SimCity series but Spore is a step beyond; it's a challenge even for someone as established as Will Wright.

I recently got a chance to try out the game and I must say I was really impressed. The creature creator is just a small part of the entire game and yet it offers so much. Before we go ahead let me share some info about the game.

There are few phases that one must go to to reach the creature phase:

The tide pool phase is the starting point of the game. The player guides a simple microbe around in a 2D environment, eating other weaker cells. This is a fight for survival and your microbe must pass the test if it deserves a place in the World outside. Ironically enough, it's your world and your creature must earn the right to survive.

Sounds like a more dramatic version of Billy Madison, where the father puts the son through a harsh life to teach him how to survive (not the best of examples, I know.) There are at least three other types of cells, two of which can eat the player's microbe to begin with. Once the microbe has eaten several cells, it lays an egg, which when clicked, opens the creature editor and allows the player to modify the appearance, shape and abilities of the microbe.

Creature Phase

While the tide pool phase introduces the player to the game and its editor, the creature phase gives your imagination a face, body and some more physics.

It is similar to the tide pool phase, but there are several important differences - it's in 3D for starters. The creature phase begins under water. The appearance of the player's creature is based on the microbe that the player created in the tide pool phase. The basic goal is the same - hunt food to earn DNA points and avoid being eaten by predators. Unlike the asexual reproduction in the tide pool phase, the player must now locate a mate.

Once that is over you lay an egg. It's not as simple as, "Hey, that's done, now let's watch it grow." You have to protect your egg from other predators. Once hatched, a smaller version of your designed creature is born - down to every detail, even a very high-pitched squeaky voice. All of this change as your creature grows. You then feed and grow, acquire more DNA points. Your fins are then replaced with arms and legs and are able to move on land and explore the outside world.
