Sony Walkman NWZ-S616F/B Media Player

Sony Walkman NWZ-S616F/B Media Player

The legacy of the Walkman continues, but will this one stand out in the burgeoning crop of new PMPs?

Good audio quality, Good user interface, Tactile controls, speedy data transfers.

Doesn't have as large a screen as we'd have liked, A bit expensive.

Design and Construction

Taking a cue from Sony Ericsson's K-series models, this Walkman dons a soft black exterior. The player is a bit thicker as compared to competing models from other manufacturers, but it weighs about the same. The player is sized quite right -- it's convenient to carry around.

The K750i and the Walkman, side-by-side

The screen has a good resolution for its size, it's pretty bright, and the clarity is good. Below the screen lie the five-way navigation buttons and two function keys. On the left is the hold switch, and the right has the volume keys.

The earphone port placement on top, I think, is a good decision. At the bottom is a proprietary connector port.

I haven't really found touch-based input solutions that useful (with the exception of the iPod's touch-wheel, with which you can fully throttle through a long playlist). This Walkman has traditional buttons that offer good tactility -- no accidental maneuvers. The dedicated volume controls come in handy too, to change the volume irrespective of where you are in the menu system.
The player feels pretty tough; I think it'll be able to withstand quite a bit of improper handling.

Sony only good for making cassette palyer walkmans ,they are nowhere near the quality of Philips sa 1356/97 recently launched in india@2400 Rs ,audio quality is excellent and realistic and not manipulated and artificially created megabass and mids as in a sony.Battery life really rocks, where as sony batteries have very high failure rate in laptops, mobiles.as will be in mp3walkmans

Actually in terms of Audio quality, almost all the default earphones suck!! Even sony ones are no good! If one really wants to experience the top quality sound for a sensible price, the best way is to use In-ear earphones from Sony, Creative, Sennheiser or JBL. I own a Creative EP-630 and Sony MDR-EX32LP along with an iPod Nano and i must confess, the sony ex 32 is better than Creative mainly due to its superb clarity in the mid frequency region. lows, super lows and highs are pretty much the same!! Creative one costs around 750 bucks in grey market and the sony one 1200. Actually they churn out superb music outta any player, even the cheap Mitashi!! and i swear by these two earphones!! Infront of these, even the iPod's and Sony's default earphones are junk!!

Noise canceling earphones, even passive ones are a definite must have for even entry level audiophiles. That said, I have a question. When are we going to see some A2DP support on decent DAPs ? I mean, is it that hard ? Every mid-hi range phone has it ffs

The Samsung YP-T10 is a good player with support for A2DP...check out our review for more info.

I did consider the t10 but the touch-only interface isn't really my thing. Thanks

A Sony is a Sony, but I have a Creative zen video 30Gb on which I watch lots of movies during flights.Outstanding big screen picture and clarity. I guess this is not in that ballpark.

I agree to have creative 4gb...that is much better than this product...which has 2.5 inch screen and extentable memory as well....also has FM radio
