Features
The Sony MRW62E-S2 is very compact, as you can see above, and is almost the size of a small cigarette case. The unit has a strong polymer casing, which is black, and a silver-gray top surface. Unlike the Kingston reader we reviewed a few days ago, this one does not have any moving parts, and that means a longer life.
The memory slots are situated at the front of the unit; there's a miniUSB socket at the back, and the bundled USB cable connects from here to the PC. It is bus-powered, so no separate power supply is required to power it up. There's an indicator LED at the front of the unit.
The MRW62E-S2 is a 19-in-1 memory card reader, meaning it can read 19 formats of memory cards. The formats supported are Memory Stick, Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick PRO, Memory Stick PRO Duo, Memory Stick Mirco, CompactFlash, Microdrive, SmartMedia, xD-Picture Card, SD Memory Card, mini SD Card, MultiMediaCard, and RS-MNC. Sony Ericsson phone owners will sorely miss the lack of support for M2, which was where the Kingston FCR-HS219/1 scores. You require an adapter for the M2 to work with this reader.
USB 2.0 is supported, and the device is also compatible with USB 1.1. Plugging it in will make it show up in Windows Explorer as four removable drives.
