After 2 years and over 15 models later, SE may have just hit the jackpot, or have they?
Back in 1979, Sony -- the Japanese multi-national corporation, gave birth to the 'Walkman'. The purpose of devices bearing this brand was to make music portable for the masses. They started with cassette players; later progressing to the 'Discman' range which included Compact Disc and MiniDisc players and finally produced the flash-based MP3 variants. During these years, they lost a large portion of their market to other companies due to stiff competition.
In order to continue with the 'Walkman revolution' -- after their joint venture of 2001 with Ericsson -- their sister concern Sony Ericsson resurrected their Walkman brand in 2005.
2 years and over 15 models later, Walkman phones have found a niche in the market for being phones that are capable of doubling up as portable audio devices as well. They're music-centric phones that are packaged with good quality earphones, memory options, easy music transfer solutions and lastly, a good media interface. Today I'm checking out one of the latest additions to this series, the W910i.

Bad weather? Bah! ...
I have the Sony Ericsson W910i and When I click on either my messages- (Inbox, Outbox, Drafts, Sent Messages), my applications (I can't even click on that!) and My Games. Everything else works but when I click on either of these things on my Mobile Phone the following message "Operation Failed" pops up. Also people can no longer send me messages: I mean they can and from their phone it says ?message sent? but the message doesn?t come. THE MESSAGE DOESNT COME CAN YOU BELIVE THAT?!?!?!?!?!? Any solutions? PLEASE?!?!?!?! I mean it has been working fine before that. What has happened?!?! I need a solution and FAST!!!

Everyone don't buy this phone as for it's price it has caused me so much trouble. From the beginning the battery life served just 7hrs on standby and it switched on/off by itself and when charging it only fullcharged to 97%. I wanted to atleast fix the battery life since I live in another country and didn't purchase the phone from Malta. I agreed with the UK SE branch that I can send the battery and see if the problem is from there, I sent it on the 26th of January and till today 2nd May I haven't received any updates on the repair or the battery. therefore I am still unable to use the phone for the last 4 mths!!!!! They should be ashamed of offering such awful service, if you don't want to be a victim of awful customer care service don't buy this phone.

Are you crazy ......... this has one of the best batteries Ive ever seen. Last 3 Days on Full Charge. 1-2 Days after Heavy Walkman Usage. Mine is Red W910i bought in Ahmadabad for 15k ....................

I have no problems what so ever with the battery in my W910i. It lasts for 3-4 days with (above) average use.

umm ..... Lots of Mistakes ....... Firstly, Hour-Long Movies are entirely possible, as long as you get the Settings Right. In fact I see 2 Movies plus decent Walkman on a single Charge. Secondly, It doesnt take 3-5 Seconds to Change Orientation. Its a safety feature so that you dont change it accidently. Try going in Media while holding in Landscape ........... it will change in a second (THAT PROVES MY POINT) Thirdly, SenseMe , works extremely well with the bundled Sony Media Manager, sure you will need to transfer music in Mass Storage (also means phone off) , ripping to SenseMe is easy, just enable the feature first in Settings. It transfered 340 Songs in 2-3 Hours on my Pentium D with 1gb of RAM Fourthly, YOU COMPLETELY FORGOT MARBLE MADNESS !!!! Easily the most interesting game for mobiles. For those who dont know, Marble Madness is a 3d Puzzle Game in which you have to control a 3d Marble to its destination with a Time Limit. The Visuals are decent (need AA though) ........... but what seperates it is the use of the Accelerometer which makes it fun. Instead of using Keys, you have to tilt your phone back and forth. Its amazing fun ...................... playing that game you will realise that the Accelerometer is ABSOLUTELY ACCURATE. LASTLY, The Slow interface is cured by the new Firmware .... of course its still resonably slow (:() but it deals with a lot of problems (and reduces battery life) !!!!!!

...also there is a third colour-brown, it should be there maybe later on Alfa. Not mocking the reviewer, but should include the point that all walkman phones should include the stereo speakers- its my 2 cent advice!!

Dear Roshan, Thank you for your valuable inputs from time to time. It seems that you have scanned through my review with great detail to point out so much additional information. The fact of the matter is that we here at techtree have to stick to a schedule. If i wanted to have it my way, I would have grilled all my review models for at least a month before putting my thoughts on paper. But that's not how it works. :( Thus, there will be times when i miss out on a few things from time to time. Common, i'm only human! Although i try to cover as much as I can about the product. Bottom line, i'm the Reviewer for TechTree, you are the owner of a W910i. Obviously you will have more knowledge about the product than I. And it's not like i'm complaining. Lastly, YES, the W910i that i tested was even slower than my two-generation old K750i.

I use my w910i as a permanent modem for my laptop and achieve better connection than a land line!

...Also the vibration mode is less intense then other Sony Ericsson phones. Your review looks incomplete this looks more like a mini review if you ask me.

Dude, I am owning this phone. I dont think this phone is slow at all-even on max capacity and full load with 4gb memory card. Are you sure???

Pretty good review. But you forget to mention in your conclusion that a better & more economical buy would be the w580i as it mirrors most of the features as the w910i except the 'sense-me' which you are not a fan of anyway. Selling at around 12k, the lower price model is a better buy. I got one & it works gr8!

Rohan, your review has something missing. You are saying that 2 megapixel camera is average, however you forget this is a walkman series phone, so when you are writing a review on walkman phones, make sure it qualifies as one-same goes for cybershot phones. Next time please include after sales service in your reviewing points.

Oh..sony. Just rehashing their old product by making a permutation of it. Simply making the w950i into a slider isn't innovation. All you guys do now is either make a flip, slide or a candy bar variant with new buttons and features remain more or less same.

pretty good review rohan but i expected a comparison of the the sound quality with music phones by other brands including parameters like volume level, distortion & frequency reproduction. between i have always noticed with walkman phones that via wired headphones the sound although very refined still is not satisfactorily loud but via the bluetooth headsets namely "s9" its a total different game . the loudness is just 2 much for a great aural xperience. can the reviewer answer me for this.
by abhishek, jaipur, on Dec 06, 2007 10:25 AM, Report abuse Reply
With respect to audio quality the W910i is pretty much the same as compared to previous walkmans. Thus i chose not to go in-depth on it. And yes, what you say is true. The sound output with the S9 bluetooth headset is very loud as compared to the wired ones. My analysis with regards to this phenomenon is that probably due to the fact that the S9 is a battery-powered headset with a separate volume control on it, it has the capacity to deliver greater volume than the std. wired ones which draw power from the phone itself.

It's TOO slow, and the camera quality ain't reflecting the price either!
by bidhan, Pune, on Dec 06, 2007 11:56 AM, Report abuse
Why the hell can't SE stick to standards and have a micro/mini USB port and a 3.5mm jack??? Its the only thing that prevented me from buying K850i and I went for the N95-8GB instead. Damn happy with it.
