Sony Ericsson P1i

Sony Ericsson P1i

Frazier Barretto, Oct 05, 2007 2137 hrs IST

Sony Ericsson's P1i flaunts push email feature and also delivers on the multimedia front.

Symbian 9.1 OS, 3.2 MP autofocus Camera, Jog Dial navigation, MP3 Player with Walkman features, 3G Ready, Blackberry connectivity

A bit slow, No EDGE

Sony Ericsson launched the P1i to build on its range of P Series handsets. The P1i boasts of having push email features. Apparently, it also delivers on the multimedia front. But can it level above the P990i? Read on to find out.

Bundle

Sony Ericsson P1i handset Stereo headset (Standard Sony Ericsson) 1GB M2 Sony memory USB cable Carry pouch Cradle Extra stylus Charger CD and manual Specifications Network: UMTS/GSM 900/GSM 1800/GSM 1900 Sizes: 106x55x17 mm Weight: 124 grams Screen: 2.6" 262K color LCD touchscreen (240x320 pixels) Operating System: Symbian 9.1 UIQ 3.0 Battery: 1120 mAh <__PAGETITLE__Intro, Bundle, Specifications __/PAGETITLE__> Build & Design The Sony Ericsson P1i has a rock solid image. The phone is well built and seems like it can take a fall or two easily. The phone is a mix-n-match of materials. On the face of the phone there's brushed steel enveloping the edges, while on the back, its silver plastic. The front and sides of the phone feature a gloss finish, and the back of the phone has a smooth rubberized plastic finish. This all makes the phone look elegant, though I personally don't appreciate the gloss finish on the sides. It gives you comfort but could give you the scares of the phone slipping off from your palm and the only little resistance provided is from the rubberized back. The face of the phone incorporates a huge 2.6" touchscreen LCD, followed by the QWERTY keypad. It isn't the standard keypad; it's ripped right off from the M600i - with 1 difference: the last line of buttons is equally sized in the P1i, unlike in the M600i. Above the top left corner of the screen, beside the earpiece of the phone, is the secondary camera for video calls, and below the earpiece is a neat impression of the Sony Ericsson logo.

The left side of the phone has the touchpad housing of the stylus. The lanyard loop, jog dial, back key, and the main navigation controls are on this side of the phone too. The navigation is quite comfortable for right-handed people. As for the lefties, it could be a little awkward. The right side of the phone has an internet hotkey and the camera button. This side of the phone also contains the M2 card slot protected by a hard plastic dust cover.

The back of the phone has a large chrome ring, within which is the 3.2 MP camera lens. Nothing is present on the back except for a standout chrome strip, which adds to the phones elegance. The top of the phone has the power button and the Infrared port, while the bottom of the phone has the multi-purpose Fast port connector.

<__PAGETITLE__Build & Design __/PAGETITLE__> Interface The Sony Ericsson P1i has a simple interface; even a novice can navigate to any option they're looking for. The phone has a 208MHz processor, which uses 128MB of RAM from the total 160MB of internal memory. In spite of these specs, I found the phone to be a little slow. The memory bump-up has been utilized via much optimization. But a slightly better processor with this kind of optimization would have surfed right through the storm of application processing. The jog-dial interface is the best part of the P1i; it makes navigating through the menus an easy, one-handed job. The jog-dial has a click as well to select, and there's a back key as well to move a level back. This is a popular feature in Sony Ericsson smartphones. The interface has a feature called Activity Menu. In this, you've 15 icons - and even then your screen is uncluttered. The icons can be minimized to only show the first row. The best part is that if you ve internet access on your phone and keep connected to an IM client, you can actually make a contact one of the icons. This allows you to simply click and chat with your favorite contact. Activating the Activity Menu, you also get the schedule of the day that you can minimize or maximize whenever you want to rain check. Using the phone as a touchscreen is also simple. Handwriting recognition is decent, and there's always the QWERTY keypad to help you type faster. Though this could be a debate because not all are comfortable with this awkward keypad. It took me about a week before I could punch in an SMS without needing to look at the keypad. Once you get used to it, it'll be a breeze to type and much better to operate than the stylus. Camera

The P1i has a 3.2 MP autofocus camera. It has LED flash assistance as well for capturing images in low lighting conditions. The LED is smart and comes ON only when capturing the image instead of staying ON the entire time and sucking on the battery life. The images are captured at a max resolution of 2048x1536 pixels. Image quality is good, and in low lighting the images are very acceptable. The camera has video recording capability as well. At CIF resolution of 320x240 pixels, the video quality is good. You can record video with or without sound. Multimedia The P1i has a common media player for playing audio and video files apart from separate audio and video players as well. The music player is nice; a Walkman like application sans the flashiness. The music player has the Walkman proprietary equalizer preset MegaBass. The P1i also has a decent FM Tuner. <__PAGETITLE__Interface, Camera, Multimedia __/PAGETITLE__> Connectivity The P1i has a good list of connectivity. The phone has the ancient infrared as well as the latest Wi-Fi. It's also 3G ready with a dual camera for video calls. The phone has basic GPRS as well - though it misses EDGE, hinting that the phone is made for the UK. Even there, not many are happy with Sony Ericsson churning out phones without EDGE. Wi-Fi is easy to setup - just as in a Windows Mobile handset; no need to punch in codes to get info. The Bluetooth is a v2.0 and has Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) capabilities. The phone also has Blackberry services to work easy with push e-mail clients. So you can access your office emails, etc. without much problems. Battery Life The P1i has an average battery life. The phone will last you just a day with usage of all the whistles and bells of the phone. The specs state a talktime of 4 hours from the 1120 mAh rated battery. The phone lasted me a day with about 2.5-3 hours of talktime, WiFi usage, and just a little music and camera shots. It's pretty acceptable. But I'd ideally want to use my phone for at least a couple of days before I need to put it back on charge. You can use the bundled cradle for this purpose. You can not only charge your phone but also connect it to the PC via the cradle. Conclusion The Sony Ericsson P1i can be purchased off the shelf for around Rs.24,000 with a 1-year warranty. The phone is a good buy if you can do without EDGE (a major issue, as EDGE is the fastest available connection in the country till 3G comes around) and the awkward keypad. At the end of the day the P1i is a worthy successor to the older P Series handsets from Sony Ericsson.

I wnnt to Buy Sony P1I

by Ajay, Pune, on Jun 15, 2009 11:44 AM, Report abuse   Reply

I have used P990i and P1i. P1i beats all smart phones in the market in all aspects. It has smart-QWERTY keyboard, Memory expansion, Blackberry connect, UIQ OS, decent camera, touch screen interface. Only thing this phone lacks is EDGE. This is a complete business-entertainment phone which is not as big as BB handsets yet more powerful. With its expanded memory (128 MB) it can really do multi-tasking well. I am using WiFi with Fring (free download) to do voice chat with MSN/Google/Sky contacts which is an amazing thing.

by Amar, Chennai, on Oct 22, 2007 02:44 PM, Report abuse   Reply

hey amar, i have some query on Fring. Can we call MSN&Google contacts directly via Fring or does the software call to some local number to connect and we are charged for a local call + data call(GPRS/3G) ??

by nanda kishore, tampere, on Oct 22, 2007 06:58 PM, Report abuse

Nanda, Thru your WiFi connection between your mobile and the wireless access point, Fring logs to MSN/Google/Sky etc?Fring consolidates all available contacts and shows it up in a screen. It does not use telephone numbers to make calls instead it uses SIP protocol to initiate voice calls between you and the contact. Infact, you will even receive ring tone from Fring when you receive calls from the otherside. With your Bluetooth headset you can even walk freely and talk with your MSN/Google/Sky contacts. Apart from this there is another option where you need to register with Fring to call telephone number ? this is more like VoIP calls. Basically, both options are possible based on your needs.

by PMS, coimbatore, on Jun 10, 2008 08:43 AM, Report abuse

Amar, does ur tel operator charge 4 the fring voice chat over the Wi-Fi? as per logic, it seems yes, as each and every sip call will utilize some amount of bandwidth and u gotta pay as per internet data tariff plan, isnt it?

Hi, I have a P1i phone. I find this very user friendly. I have a small query. The Blackberry registration is done and the symbol appears on the right side. Iam not able to close this. If I try doing something, I get a message as Dump File Created and Reason Code as 3 etc etc What does this mean? I was getting such message for some other functions. This used to pop continously. I got the software reloaded. Now similar thing pops up when I try some settings to be changed. Can someone advise.

I bought this phone 4 weeks before. Was working fine when i got it , from the first day i usually restarts saying your phone has been restarted for improving performance, and after two weeks it had its display blank. I took it to Sony erricoson service, they changed almost everything in phone starting from LCD to motherboard, and it took 10 days for the same. For a two week old phone and repair of 10 days, there is no better way to waste your money and efforts buying this phone . Believe me Sony erricson has pathetic service , they dont respond to calls nor replies to email. The products are victim of pathetic quality checks, I heard if you buy outside india, you get the product made in Sweden rather than one you get it from India which is chinese made

by Kiran, Bangalore, on Jan 25, 2008 01:49 PM, Report abuse   Reply

i got this mobile say about 4 weeks back.. and i found tat the handsfree was not perfectly fitting to the connector port. i took it to the sonyerricson service and they took it back and gave me a receipt with an option to get a new handset from the place of purchase. They keep up the promise of replacement guarantee. check it out and ask for a new handset...

by Anonymous, coimbatore, on Jun 10, 2008 07:47 AM, Report abuse

Not necessarily. Phones sold through dealers in Bangkok, Manila, Singapore, and Hong Kong are generally made in China. You can get Swedesh SE phones from smaller, independent sellers. While it's true that there used to be quality differences between Swedish and Chinese SE phones, this is already minimal as global production has shifted to China and quality has improved. And it's true that SE after-sales in India is horrid, if not the worst. I heard they've closed the service centre in Andheri.

true....but what's with the size bro!! P990 is a brick compared to the P1..remember..thats why SE had to release the P1 immediately after the P990..coz people simply denied to carry a brick in their pockets..n if u r flying..u d need to book an extra seat for P990..for God's sake ! my laptop is lighter and smaller than the P990...maybe even my desktop!! on the price front P990 is a good buy..and u cud get it for 12K in the grey market.. but always keep it in mind P990 is outdated even when u buy it..so my advise ! STAY away from it n go for the P1i....its simply cooler, lighter, sexier and smarter.

by Jayant, Pune, on Mar 11, 2008 01:05 PM, Report abuse

I bought this on 27 Jul 07 frm chennai... very first day it first arrived in the stores... have been using it without problems since then... got it for 23500+VAT. may be you can get it for 22K + VAT today... the display is brilliant and the loads of 3rd party s/w available make ur life easy... I am using Airtel and GPRS is real slow.... but still can easily set up pop3 access on the phone to check office and gmail emails... no problems there... The web browser... opera is very gud without support for flashLite though. Google is providing free GOOGLE-MAP software for UIQ3 and works well on this phone... indian maps are fairly detailed to street level and decently tagged too.... i write block letters and find the handwriting recognition very helpful for text input... Now there is no 3G in india... wi-fi hotspots are rare or paye per use... gprs speed sux... so this phone is practically for photo-shooting, mp3 and style... there are many less expensive phones that can do the same.

how and where to buy this phone as grey in bangalore

by pravin, bangalore, on Oct 09, 2007 09:28 PM, Report abuse   Reply

This handset is really too good, but price of 21k-22k is bit higher.Price should have been around 16k-18k.Other P series handset are bulky in looks, but this one is slim and the touchscreen is also very good.Camera is also good as SE cameras are always good.Other features are also good and best feature is WIFI, it is pretty fast and one can use it at airports, coffee parlours or colleges. Also this handset has superior sound quality and believe me sound quality is better then walkman phones.Overall this phone is 4.5/5 for features and 4/5 in looks.

Not sure why any business person would go for this phone... MP3, camera and wifi in phone are not of great use, there is no sign of 3g in india yet, and a blackberry 8700g is far more functional for business and emails than this equipment, for around the same price.

Wat a donkey. Idiot.... WIFI is not important for business? wat business are you doing? are u a butcher or something? fool...... and which business phone doesnt have any of the above mentioned features??? Thats why i say.... mind ur own' 'business'

I actually agree with you. With the GPRS Connection having a crawling speed, to put this phone to any kind of use, we will need to rely on WiFi. The other thing with I dont like about these phones is that every maker has their own charger. I have to carry along two things, one is their data cable and the other is their charger. Why dont they just standardize on something!!!! For me Unless it charges through a standard USB Cable (micro/mini etc) I am not going to buy it.

I have a blackberry 8700g and I know how functional it is. If you want wifi, you would rather use a laptop than a phone. And my above comments are purely my opinion, no one has any right to use my name in an offensive manner! I have reported the first message for offensive, please behave yourself and if you disagree with me, do it so politely.
