Sony Ericsson K850i

Sony Ericsson K850i

This CyberShot-sporting Sony Ericsson model is more of a camera and less of a phone. So how is it in terms of functionality and usability?

5MP Camera, Xenon flash, motion sensor, 3G-ready

Odd keypad and D-Pad placement, touch buttons aren't tactile, sub-par build, poor package

Build and Design

Here's one beauty of a phone; it resembles a camera even more when it's held like one. The build is plastic, with an overall gloss finish and matte finishing running around it. A thin metal strip runs right through the center of the sides; this is either fluorescent green / blue and is very appealing. The back of the phone attracts fingerprints because of the gloss finish - a major turnoff. The left of the phone is devoid of controls, while the right features a new camera On/Off button beside the shutter button. The camera has an auto lens cover. The power button on the top doubles as a quick profile changer.

The face of the phone is what we found really innovative: a large 2.2-inch screen is made possible by placing the D-pad within the alphanumeric keypad. Three soft-touch buttons replace the standard buttons, which makes maximum usage of the provided space. It does take some time getting used to, because the D-Pad is only directional, and the select is the center soft-touch. This means discomfort: menu navigation times increase. Moreover, the new keys used for the alphanumeric keypad are pretty non-ergonomic. Quick texting is not really possible - you could find yourself often hitting two keys at the same time. People with large thumbs have been warned!

The fastport is, once again, at the bottom. The battery compartment is very much like that of a digicam. It's a first-of-its-kind; the same compartment also houses the hot-swap SIM slot and the M2/microSD dual memory slot.

I have 2 k850i phones. The camera is superb esp the true life color.I hve had this phone since nov 2007.The keypad is good since each key is distinctive to touch.

FYI, the keyboard really sucks! for sms junkies, this is a definite no no, unless you key in using your nails, which again, is a pain. the touch sensitive buttons are an innovative feature, but again, how long are they gonna last? not much.

IN the cam war Of 2 & 3.2 Mp SE was no doubt the leader but now for 5 mp Nokia N 82 is the best! NUMERO UNO!! excellent night shots with the Xenon flash Lets hope the newer cybershot SE 902c & Se G900 ( both 5 mp cam) does well.

sorry dear, K850i, d best. I used N95, N82 even, But sony seems to be morew sexy and have an executive look. And of cam, chance less. Its really worth for spending money for this set. Yo can challenge.. really its the simply best with classic features.

I wouldn't agree with you. The camera of Nokia N82 rocks... Its the best I have ever seen in a cell phone, and not to mention the flash is simply amazing. N82 is the real cyber shot! I am soon going to upgrade my N73 (which rocks in its category) to N82!

Its better to go for NOKIA N82..its really worth and stands quite better than K850i

by PRAVEEN, TOKYO, on Feb 19, 2008 09:39 AM, Report abuse   Reply

I agree with you. Nokia N82 is the best and most feature rich phone in the world better than N95 optical image stabilisation(o.i.s) and DVB-H (mobile TV) are the only missing features. SE K850i can't even go near that phone!!!
