Riding on the waves of the previous success, Sony Ericsson released the K790i, which is truly a feature packed piece.
Classy design, Large screen, 3.2 MP CyberShot, Xenon flash, Great camera function, Smooth and easy Interface, Bluetooth v2.0, A2DP support, Good connectivity options, Expandable memory.
Slightly bulky, Bit cramped Net Browser and Function hotkeys, QCIF video (176 x 144).
Build and Design
For the starters, K790i is a very sturdy handset. The feel of the phone is pretty solid; it doesn't make creaky sounds even when you hold it firmly. The phone's dimensions are a little larger than the K750i; hence, it weighs just a little over the 100 grams mark. The dimensions of the phone stand at 105 x 47 x 22 mm and it weighs 115 grams. The phone when held doesn't feel even a bit heavy because of the perfect weight distribution though it does feel a little bulky carrying around.
The bigger size of this phone helps find space for a whole 2-inch screen, which is simply brilliant. The screen is a 256K TFT with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. Below the screen is the joystick and a similar layout of main operational keys just like the K610. The joystick of the phone is even better than the ones seen in previous Sony Ericssons. The joysticks have improved over the years right from the K700i, which had many drawbacks.
Like the K610, the Net Browser and Function hotkeys found in the main operational keys area are a bit too cramped. There is always a good chance that you would press either the button above or below them while trying to press any of the two. The rest of the layout of the phone is similar to that of the good old K750i just for a few changes. Here, the Infra-red port is placed on the right side towards the end below the Camera button. The hand strap provision of the phone is at the bottom beside the multi-usage port. The memory slot has been taken higher and now in line with the position of the camera lens. The memory card slot has a dust cover which is unlike the one seen in the K750i; this dust cover is a bit unconventional when swapping the memory card.
Other than the above mentioned layout, there are two extra buttons above the screen on both ends which are solely for the camera; these two buttons provide options and functionality that we will discuss while having a detailed look at the camera.
The K790i has a great finish; the whole body is made with a mix of plastic and rubber giving you a firm grip of the phone no matter how you hold it. It's something that is being seen in many phones; thanks to MotoPEBL that was the first to come with the innovation, the pioneers in design.
The keypad of the phone is neat; although when you look at the phone, it feels like the keypad is picked from Nokia's 3230. This has a much better feel; just right, not too big neither too thin. The keypad has a purple backlighting. Now, though the color may seem odd, it is nothing gaudy; in fact, it is quite cool.

Hi...i have few questions to all those who have been using this phone for arnd a year...first is about joystick reliability and second is about picture quality in night or dark...thanks in advance...
The joy stick on mine is wearing out and I got it about 11 months ago. Still works fine and you really dont need to use the joystick as much as you will want to.
Joystitck is good and solid
Picture quality in night/dark is excellent.... the flash is so powerful that even in total darkness u can expect day like clarity.
I want to know about best price of sony ericcssion k 790i. as per my best of my knowledge i came to know the price is Rs. 9600. pls suggust me what is the best price now?
hi .. friends..
can u do a favor?
i want to know the exact market price for sony ericsson k790i
because i m crazy for that mobile and i want to buy it..
Hi sameer . At present d cost of 790 is 9700. I had brought this mob 4 months. Its having excellent options . But slight fear about d life of joystick.
I WANT TO KNOW ABOUT K790i MARKET PRICES IN DELHI AND ALSO ABOUT IT BATTERY BACKUP & ACCESSORIES WHICH IS GIVEN WITH THIS MOBILE SET AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE.
for your kind informatin please go through the meaning of "smartphone" this k-series phones are not smartphones they have properitary OS and no third party softwares please donot include the term smart with these dumbphones and what ever u say these phones are not even comparable to nokia symbian phones
Dear bala..dont even try to compare SE to N-series..coz nSeries has only one positive point symbian OS..rest u can tcompare to SE wether battery life, camera, and for sound dont even think bout it..SE has the best..so need of having a dumb N series..
dear bala ji, the k790i is not a smart phone..but what do you have to say about nokia SMART phones getting slow, Abundant VIRUSES. And as far as third party applications are concerned java applications are matching up the curve SOo..is there anything u wud WANNA SAY :)
I have read in many reviews that the current price of K790i is less than Rs10K. Is it true? I want to buy this phone, but I am really worried about its joystick. Is it more sturdy than the one in K750i? Also does this phone have "Megabass" ?
Yes, U can get the phone at around Rs 9500-9600. But, that will be with just 64MB card which is not sufficient. So, it may cost u around RS 10200-10300 along with 1GB M2 card.
About joystick, I can only say that it is good but its always better to avoid using joystick whenever possible, be it on any cellphone, as it will increase its life..
K790i not being from Walkman series, does not have Megabass. But the quality of sound is very good (comparable to Walkman phones) if u use Walkman earphones like HPM 70 or HPM 82.
when starting with a new one it will not match to n-series in terms of loudness and bass. However you can mod. your phone
and customize everything and get the best audio and video experience.
Using the joystick only for moving around the phone menus will certainly increase the joystick life. Use the buttons provided specifically for selecting.
Lots of things are incorrectly stated:
1. K790 is not quad-band. It does not have HSDPA. It has only EDGE
2. Drivers are not required with PC, and it functions comfortably as a mass storage device
3. CIF resolution is 352 x 288, not 240 x 320. The latter one is QVGA
Author should check facts before writing an article
well i m looking for sony ericsson original handsfree
portable if possible. could u tell me some shops in mumbai where i would get it please reply.
Thanks
It does more than its cost. Ergonomically, camera setting may not look nice to many; but they'll love it when they shoot in natural light. With flash, in a room? ...err welllll a phone is a phone not camera. You will face a hard time if you know a bit about photography. Else in natural light you wont trust that this small device is a camera and is intelligent too!!
im stayin in chennai...i bought a k790i from hello world for 12800 on 19th oct 2007...lost the box and all accessories...i hv bought a charger and data cable wid cd now n its workin fine now..if anyone wants to buy please tell me cause i need cash...sms me on 09884182630

AT Sony-mony in Mumbai, they have an exchange offer... any of your old mobile in working condition can be exchanged for a little discount on the new one...
The Sony Ericsson K790i is available for Rs. 15,000 with 1GB card... if you have an old phone, they will give you a discount as well......
Cheers
Hi Guys,
I recently bought a SE K790i. The phone is just great. But I got cheated by sangeetha bangalore. From june 15 Sony is giving 1 GB card free along with K750i. But sangeetha people cheated me and charged me RS1800 for the 1 GB card.
Beware before approaching Sangeetha.

Hi all,
I am planning to buy this one....It looks great and features are good!!!
I want to know more about the battery life, connectivity options and also some general problems with sony ericsson mobiles.
I am basically a hardcore nokia user but still this model attracted my attention...[3.2mp cam].
-gk-
I need your comments please....
hi,
i got the mobile 3 weeks before and the battery life is very good. but last week, i faced a problem that the taken picture cannot be stored. but i went to service centre and immediately they reinstalled the softare and now working fine. other than this, k790i is excellent in all ways.
Beware of buying the grey market products be it mobile phones or memory cards or any other electronic products. Although the prices in grey market are attractive but the stuff they sell is duplicate. Yes you have read right, all the grey market electronic stuff is duplicate. The product is made in unauthorized smaller factories in China and exported to India without labels. Then our great Indian seller thugs get the phones labelled and boxes made and sell to innocent people like you and me. Since I have come to know of this racket, I will tell to everyone. Also this grey market stuff goes bad after sometime and we blame the company for a bad product which they never made in the first place. All these companies have ruined their business by transferring their manufacturing technology in China. Chinese people have replicated everything. So if you are getting a memory card or mobile very cheap without bill, God can only help you with your duplicate goods purchase.
In same gsm arena you are talking about, there was a review comparing "LG KG920 vs. SE K800 vs. Nokia N73". Author's conclusion is...
It's just a matter of preference - if you like your photos with more "wow" factor and never plan to edit them later, then your safe bet is Nokia N73. Otherwise, if you want your photos as accurate as possible and preserving as much detail for further editing, then you should go with Sony Ericsson K800.
Its a great fone. I got is for @17500 with bill. Its stands true to its USP ie the 3.2 MP cam. The clarity is excellent, with little skills u can take g8t pic.
This is a nice phone i would like buy this mobile. I dont know what is the price of this mobile in India currency. please give me all information about this mobile and price.
I bought k790i on 15th dec. The clarity of the screen is very good, faster than k750i. If u have this mobile no need buy a digi cam and the battery life is also good.
hi there i bought sonyericcson k790i but unfortunatlely my friend put code in it and now when i change the sim card then it alert me for code that i dont know please let me know what should i do waiting for ur reply.

Decent review, but since the USP of this phone is a camera, i guess itsn't covered properly. Now, One of the really great feature is that, it gives you compelte (well pretty much for a cam phone) EXIF info, which is really imp for anyone who cares for his picutres. Second, i have seen this before too, generally the camera pics shown, are like some random pics, guys, take some pics, which illustrate features, for example, take a pic, where there are two objects under sunlight, one black and one white, so we can see how the camera handles contrast. For auto-focus, take a pic, of a cream color object over piece of white paper, it will show us how good the focussing is. Now i don't know if this lets you choose all the settings but then atleast for your digital camera reviews, one of the good pics to take is of a moving ceiling fan, the thing is too adjust the ISO setting, flash power, Shutter speed and aperature value to take an image which shows the blades of the fan individually with sharp edges, if the camera can handle than it is good test to pass. (yeah, for the last shot, i should also say, if the reviewer can handle it). Likewise, there should be pics to highlight other features. (the image of a moving train, caught still in one of the cam review, is one of the few images which had a reason to be posted in a review)
what say guys?
Exactly... to your list, I would also want to add performance of the camera under dark/dimly lit conditions. Basically, I am looking at the phone as a replacement digital camera ;-)...some random pics will just not do!!
Well I have a few gripes about the phone and i'm telling this after I've bought the phone last week...
1. The keypad seems too small to be usable! Its tricky to dance around those keys
2. The general volume from the regular handset speaker (not loud speaker) is very very low. Difficult to hear the other person in crowded areas
Apart from that it produces great pictures, display is damn sharp, music quality is OK, headphones seem flimsy, but overall features are great! A great phone to have when traveling all over the world (tri-band + EDGE). I only wish they allowed it to be used as a mass storage device as well! But then what choices do we have?
ahem, Phone DOES work as a 'Mass Storage Device'
When you plug in the data cable , you will get 3 options ,
File Transfer Mode
Phone Mode
Print ( If you dont see it, u need to upgrade phone s/w).
If you select File transfer the phone becomes mass storage, and Phone and Mem card appear as seperate drives
Hi,
I am planning to buy this one.... I need to know, how long it will take to charge the battery fully?? How is the signal reception?
I heard that in sony ericsson is having a poor signal reception when compared it with nokia mobile phones...
How about this model??
Expecting your reply....:)
the phone should have a little bit sleek trendy look .. moreover it should be a bit slim and compact as now days space complexity in pocket is problem .. and there should be some attractiveness so that it should catch everyone's eye .
i ges this new offering frm sony puts simliar n-series phones on the back pedal...n-series is nothng but some sheer brand value...sony ericsson rulzzz...
hey i already use this phone and believe me its amezing experiance with this phone u dont need to but digi cam for instance its picture quality is extreamly high and well sound is also good one so basically this phone is worth for style and usability stuff...
I think the K610i (3G + 2MP + A2DP stereo bluetooth + almost all other standard features and (-) Dual cam) is another great phone selling for around 13K is the next best alternative..!
The K790i?s most outstanding feature has to be the Cyber-Shot digital camera built into the back of the handset. Earlier just 2 MP cams on fone to take photos were sufficient Sony Ericsson have gone one step better and teamed up with the Cyber-Shot range of digital cameras from Sony to provide a 3.2mpx digital camera with dedicated Xenon flash The digital camera is of the highest quality and as well as looking awesome on the 320 x 240 pixel TFT LCD (262k colours) of the K790i, when printed out on professional photographic paper they look just as if taken by a ?real? camera. The Xenon flash is unlike anything you?ve ever seen on a mobile phone, and the advanced landscape oriented camera application has a host of advanced features. I am using a K-790i since Mid August 06 bought for 22.5k- and it has proven to be a real eye catcher and has induced me to mostly leave my Canon digicam home- even on functions. Mr. Baretto has not really given the only FLIP SIDE to K-790i- this is the High Price of 1 GB memory stick micro m2 expansion card- which is 3.5k compared to similar capacity MS Duo Pro cards prices at 1.2k for K-750i. A nice review overall.
M2 Memory is specifically made for mobiles soon the rates will surely drop as SE has made it the standard of memory for all their new mobile comin, but prices won't drop to the level of microSD .... its Sony memory we are talking here so its expected
btw Thnx :D
A job well done. Really well written, and a nice phone too. Especially noticeable is the professional feel of the article unlike the usual techtree trend. Keep up the good work.
