In the Nero CD Speed test, it managed an average speed of 30.08X and a top speed of 39.40X, which is noticeably slower that its Lite-On counterpart (37.23X and 48.80X, respectively). The random seek time was pretty good at 91 sec and 88 sec for audio and data CDs, respectively.

I WAS TOLD TO CONTACT YOU BY THE SELLER OF A DVD.I WAS ABLE TO HEAR SOUND FROM THE DVD BUT THERE WASN'T A PICTURE SHOWING ON THE MONITOR WHICH IS RATHER UNUSUAL.WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE PROBLEM AND WHAT CAN I DO?

My friend gave me this drive for a free as he didnt use it any more, good drive, silent, fast. For all those people having the problem of their drive not being detected by their pc go into control panel, system, and then click the hardware tab. click device manager, and click the button 'search for hardware changes'. this should detect your drive. hope that helps!

Kindly help me plz, my SAMSUNG COMBO DRIVE is unable to detect dvd format either media incld. digit dvd's or other DVD movie like VOB files.& data files. i am unable to determine that why it is...... i am currently using POWER DVD application to play movies. which hangs up my pc during the period of when i insert dvd media as above..if any one is available,then plz try to solve my prob...... plz... i ill hav a great attention....... take care all of u guys bye...

This is the most stupidest DVD ROM ever built. I had just brought this drive like 2 months ago. Yesterday, it was taking ages to load the dvd. Today it stopped loading them all-together. The worst part is CDs seem to work perfectly fine.Only the DVDs is a problem. Is there anything i can do abt this? Or do i have to chuck it out and buy another ROM ?? Somebody please help. NEVER EVER AM I GONNA BUY SONY PRODUCTS AGAIN.

I got this dvd and it`s giving me trouble, games are loading but dvd is asking me to put disk in, noting not even originals originals i even bought a DVD/VCR lens cleaner. I went even from start/all programms/accessories/entertaiment/windows media player to play it from there when i went to play DVD, VCD or Audio it`s not enable. please help me

sigh, never again will i buy sony for anything involved for a pc. maybe their other drives works. M-A-Y-B-E. but sony burned me and so many others on this drive and never will again be their corporate suckers. i bought an asus for my sister's rig and samsung for mine and they effing work!

I bought this drive last month in black colour, the problem im facing that im unable to reset the region counter or make my drive region free, can any body help me find a region couter reset utility for SONY DDU 1621 S 4.1 or the region free firmware for it. go to start bottom of screen open start go to my computer open go to devices with remobal storage RIGHT CLICK ON the SONY DVD ROM DRIVE go to properties open go to HARDWARE hit TAB open FIND YOUR SONY DRIVE ON the LIST HIGHLIGHT then hit PROPERTIES their you find you region i think you only got 5 times only to switch this after you do the region hit OK . I bought Sony DVD DDU1621 a month back. Since then its a pain. Whenever I insert a DVD the machine hangs. I awitched of autoplay but no result.

it the first TIME OF MY ****** LIFE THAT I BUY A SONY PRODUCT THAT SUCK THAT MUCH! DONT BUY THIS NEVER... i return back the product 2 TIMES because after 4 month of use the DVD dont read DVD anymore, Slow the sytem...sometime FREEZE IT (event on XP) ... I'll remember that... trust me, next time i BUY ANOTHER BRAND

I am having the same problem. Whenever I placed a DVD into the drive it just freezes as well as freeze my PC. I have not been able to play any DVD on this dam DVD rom. Does anyone know of any firmware that will help?? thanks

I have this DVD player and have numerous problems with it, mainly with not playing ANY other dvd then a dvd movie. So no data/game dvd work for me at all. I bought one and regret doing so.Sorry. I dont agree to you. This drive is very much slow. and is not at all competent with other drives in the market.

I bought this drive some time ago. I got it in Black. The only problem I have had is that the fools painted the LED black along with the front face. Performance-wise this drive is good at ripping DVDs. SmartRipper shows burts of upto 14.8X during ripping. My Drive came with a copy of PowerDVD. I think Pioneer still makes the best DVD ripper.

I have this drive - Sony DDU 1621 s3.4 and want to use it to play DVD movies. But this drive has the RPC II region protection counter. Could anyone please tell me where I can find the firmware software to remove the DVD region protection? Also suggest some method of getting rid of Windows XP region protection, if any.

Go to www.mydrivers.com, you can find the firmware version 3.5. I guess Sony does not provide firware to remove region protect. You'd better backup the firmware before using it to play DVD move.
What's more, the web I mentioned above is a simplified Chinese version and it does not privide English information. You'd better use search engine to find it.

Perhaps I was taking a sneeze when ithe terms/formats DVD R and RW etc were initially explained to the world. But ever since, I have been mystified by the whole proliferation of them. Can the reviewer or any one explain what DVD+R, -R, +RW, -RW, DVD-RAM and Mount Rainier mean? While at it, also enlighten me on the times figures(52x, 16x etc) and how they are arrived at. I know that the bigger they are the better.

There was a split in the industry over which DVD recordable formats to support. The +R and +RW camp has manufacturers like Sony, while the -R/-RW camp is Pioneer (I think) and others. I haven't heard anything about DVD-RAM in a few years now, so I think it's old news. I thought Mt. Rainier is a CD-RW specification. The x multipliers are relative to the original 1x speed (which is 150 kilobytes per second for CD's. Not sure if 1x means the same thing in DVD land). So 52x CD-R means 52 * 150 = 7800 kb/s which is ~7.61 Megabytes per second. If you are burning a 700MB CD at 7.61 MB/s, you could expect it to take ~90 seconds.

I bought this drive 3 months back. Very silent.. absolutely no spin-up, spin down noise. Strangely my drive came with a copy of PowerDVD unlike this one.

It is 11/23/2007 12:04 A M last week I bought (2) sony burners DRU840A with nero 7 in the box ths was for 2 computers. I coulf not get it to play or burn a CD with any sound i would want to hear or anyone other. I called sony and ask for help in this matter. I was talked to so rude and ugly - I will never buy another sony ever again, I am putting a home studio up and was looking at a somy burner.Not now going to pay 3 times the amount but peace of mined is better then being treated nast. I found a program that rane my DVD/CD great but nero7 would not . Also a teck even tryed to fix it up but nothing.
