Finally, we got our hands on a Radeon HD3870 selling at a reasonable price. Is it still a good option?

Single slot, Bundle, Supports DX10.1 and Shader Model 4.1, Good performance.

Poor Overclocker, A bit expensive.

It's been quite some time since we reviewed an ATI graphics card and you all have been emphatically reminding us of the same. So, here's something that you have been looking for.

Launched around December 2007, the Radeon HD3870 is a mid-range card that was originally supposed to take on Nvidia's 8800GT but settled for the 9600GT instead.

Finally, we got our hands on one selling at a reasonable price.

Specifications

Bundle

Apart from the Sapphire Radeon HD3870, this is what you get in the box,

DVI-D - HDMI adapter
S-Video - Composite adapter
Power cable
S-video-RGB cable
3DMark 2006 Software Disc
Printed Manual

The bundle seems to have everything you'd need to get started except for a game but the 3DMark software disc isn't bad either.

i already have. please search on the following: anandtech, xtremetech, x-bit, Hard-OCP. Nowhere does crossfire win. Not only does it not win, in many games it doesnt even scale more than 30%.

Review's aren't bad but yeah i have to admit i tend to hurry over to the end for the prices.Suggest TechTree take notice of the trend :)

a review as dumb as it is... I read this only for prices...

by techtreefreak, whydoyoucare, on Jun 04, 2008 09:51 PM, Report abuse   Reply

this is dumb. the card is compared to a 9600GT. although it is priced almost 1500 rupees MORE than the card. so, you are recommending a card that is MORE expensive but performs the same? And your crossfire is a great option made me laugh. DO a crossfire review (i dont htink i have ever seen one on this website) No, im not an nvidia fanboy, but this review is just wrong.

by blogger, mumbai, on Jun 03, 2008 07:03 PM, Report abuse   Reply

not a dumb card, but u r dumb to realize that its 9600GT OC which is head to head with 3870..

by muzux2, Srinagar, on Jun 04, 2008 01:50 PM, Report abuse

Muzu, read the review properly. Here are some interesting things you will find - first the ASUS 9600GT is standard version. It loses to this card in Call of Juarez but wins in Company of heroes. For some strange reason, the comparasion is missing in Crysis. That is called shoddy reviewing. Why is it missing for crysis? If the 9600GT wins in Crysis then it is a better card overall as it wins 2 out of the 3 game benchmarks (no one cars for dx9 anymore)

i don't believe here, i don't know they tested..i've seen on anandtech, legitreview, tweaktown etc etc, whre an stock HD3870 beats 9600GT(stock) by almost 15%.. don't trust here, they even didn't mention Catalyst driver wch i believe is an most important thing to mention..

by muzux2, Srinagar, on Jun 04, 2008 03:47 PM, Report abuse

and i check reveiw here only for price!!

Muzu, taking your advice, I did look it up on Anandtech and here is what anandtech says - Between 8800GT and 3870, 8800GT wins hands down. Its a no contest. Coming to 9600GT versus 3870, they have tested 4 games, Crysis, oblivion, quake wars, stalker and World in Conflict Out of these, in crysis, and oblivion, the 9600GT is slower by no more than 10 %. (40fps versus 44 fps) however, it wins in ALL the other games. let me put a question this way, if you had to buy a graphics card, would u buy 3870 for 11,500 or would u rather put in 500 or 1000 rupees more and get the 8800GT? On the other side, if you buy the 9600GT, you get roughly the same performance but at much less price (1650 rupees cheaper as of today at lamington) As I see it, the 3870 is a mess in terms of positioning. It is 10% or less faster than the 9600GT but it is almost 20 percent more expensive and it is much slower than the 8800GT but not much cheaper. Finally coming to SLI and Xfire, do you know how much crossfire scaling they got at Anandtech? it scaled only 20% in just two games. in the rest, adding another card gave u only 2-5 FPS more! look at it yourself if you dont believe me

You have mentioned -- "The card has an onboard UVD for H.264, VC1, MPEG-1, MPEG-2 & DiVx decoding and also supports hardware accelerated 1080p video playback of Blu-ray and HD DVDs, and has an HDMI out with 5.1 surround sound audio support. " I dont see any HDMI port on the card ?? How do you use the HDMI option ??
