NVIDIA better take cover as ATI might just rain on their parade.

Fastest Card in the market currently, Superb performance, Good cooling.

Poor overclocker, Fan gets noisy above 50% speeds, A bit expensive.

NVIDIA has been wearing the ultimate performance crown for a long time now. However, this new entry from ATI might just shake NVIDIA and tilt the crown in their favor. The HD4870 X2 is here and is all set to create chaos in the race for the ultimate powerhouse. The Sapphire HD4870 X2 has two RV770 cores on a single board each having 1GB of GDDR5 memory.

I think that's enough to make all you hardware freaks and enthusiasts salivate. Add to that a processing power of more than 2.4 TeraFLOPS and you've got yourself an insanely powerful piece of hardware in your computer that should make Crysis look like child's play.

Now given the wonderful specifications this card should easily be able to overtake the GTX 280. We've also got the HD4870 in CrossFire-X action to throw in the mix. So let's start-off by checking out the specifications and then get right into the battleground.

Specification

The 4870 X2 is code named the R700 and uses two RV770 cores (HD4870) on a single PCB, just like ATI did with the HD3870 X2. The transistor count has doubled since we are using two cores from 965 million to around 1.5 billion. In the same way the number of stream processors is 1600(2 x 800). The clock speeds remain the same at 750MHz and so does the memory speed at 3600MHz. Both the cores are linked together by an upgraded PLX bridge (as seen on the 3870X2).

This time, the new PLX bridge is fully PCI-E 2.0 compatible and is also been optimized for this dual GPU setup. However, unlike the last time (3870 X2) instead of just putting two cores on a single PCB and linking them, ATI have optimized the RV770 core for improved scaling between the two cores. How much has it really improved? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

look at the size of that thing.... i bought a XFX 8800GT, to fit that on my computer i had to move my hard disk to another slot.... but for a thing of this..... i will certainly need a bigger cabinet like antec900 or somthing bigger.....
