Samsung YP-S5 music player

Samsung YP-S5 music player

The S5 is an evolutionary upgrade to the K5 mini-boom-box

Stereo speaker clarity, Bluetooth support (for wireless headset, file transfer, and mobile hands-free connectivity), good sound quality.

The white version looks bland, Low-resolution screen, a little expensive.

Design and Construction

The design of the YP-S5 is quite similar to that of its predecessor; it maintains the candy-bar appearance, with a kick-sliding stereo speaker.

The sliding mechanism is decently sturdy.

The S5 comes in black as well as in white. Now white hasn't been patented by Apple, but whenever people (most, anyway) see a white-colored player, the first thing they'll think is "iPod."

Well, the white unit we have with us now looks somewhat similar to a first-generation iPod nano.

Looks-wise, the player didn't appeal as much as did the YP-T10.

Also, with the white body, I faced another problem: under direct sunlight, I couldn't see the backlit touch-buttons, and I had to navigate based on approximation. I think the black version will be a better choice.

This model is slimmer by about 3 mm than the K5. A thickness of 15mm is decent, taking into account the space taken up by the inbuilt speaker. The S5 is lighter by 27 grams, too.

The 3.5mm ear-phone port and the Samsung's proprietary connector for data connectivity and charging

Here's the combined on/off switch and hold switch

The front houses the now-upgraded 1.8-inch color display. I was surprised to find that the resolution is a mediocre 176 x 220. The screen is moderately bright and clear to be able to read text, but I think it's definitely dated when it comes to video. In addition, readability is hampered under incident light.

Below the screen are the touch buttons that are present on many YP-series players.

The buttons, like those on the YP-T10, feel sensitive at first -- but they can be gotten used to, with the occasional accidental keypress, of course. I did feel the touch-sensitivity on this was a bit overly high.

What the hell is blue tooth connectivity when all it does is connect to wireless headphones. But do those phones handle a mobile + player simultaneously ?????? no one ever bothers to check this part

Samsung YP-S5 music player was introduced in 2007 and perhaps is EOL ( end of life now -because Samsung churns out music players every three months. In any case with flash memory dirt cheap -2 GB is just nothing capacity. However good review in Aug, 2007 engadget.

Conclusion: The Samsung YP-S5 2 GB sells for an MRP of Rs 8,900. That's certainly less than the 14 grand that the earlier-generation Samsung YP-K5 was priced at back then. Still, except for the speakers, this player is similar to the YP-T10 (which is around 2.5K less).
