Samsung SyncMaster 793S

Samsung SyncMaster 793S

Ameya Dalvi, Dec 09, 2004 0000 hrs IST

Let's check if this newer model from Samsung retains all the noble elements of its predecessor and goes a step further on the performance front.

Good color reproduction, Good screen geometry, Excellent contrast

Slight color registration problem, Minor Screen regulation issue

We have been recommending 17" Samsung monitors in our PC guides for a long time now. Their basic 17" model, the 753S was the best in its category by a fair distance when it was released and its reign continued for a long time. Samsung made minor modifications to the 753S and released the 773S, which has now been replaced by the 793S. Let's check if this newer model from Samsung retains all the noble elements of its predecessor and goes a step further on the performance front.

For starters, Samsung has opted for a new look for this 17 incher. Though it looks neat, I still prefer the 753S looks. But then it is just a case of individual taste and anyways this one, by no means looks bad. All the functions supported by the monitor can be accessed through the OSD (on-screen display), which can be controlled using four buttons vertically aligned at the right side of the monitor.

The Samsung 793S is a conventional flat screen monitor (not the true flat type) with a 16" viewable screen area. It supports a horizontal dot pitch of 0.23 mm. The frequency range supported by this model is 30 KHz to 70 KHz (Horizontal) and 50 Hz to 160 Hz (vertical). The maximum resolution supported is 1280 x 1024 pixels at 65 Hz refresh rate, while the recommended resolution stands at 1024 x 768 pixels at 85 Hz. However, the maximum usable resolution is 1152 x 864 pixels at 75 Hz. Maximum usable resolution signifies the maximum resolution supported by a monitor at a refresh rate of 75 Hz or better. Though 85 Hz is an ideal refresh rate, 75 Hz is the lower limit. Any refresh rate lower than 75 Hz will give a flickered output and can cause some serious eye damage after prolonged usage. The above specifications are on par with most of the standard 17" monitors available here.

We tested this monitor using DisplayMate to get a bearing on how well the monitor performs when put through various test patterns. DisplayMate first lets you tune a monitor to get the best possible display settings and then runs it through a series of test patterns to test everything from color/brightness to screen geometry to moiré and regulation.

The first piece we received had slightly flawed screen geometry. There was a bend at the top left corner of the screen. We replaced that piece with a new one and in this case, the screen geometry was perfect. As is the case with most Samsung monitors, the screen brightness and contrast were spot on. The color reproduction was excellent and the monitor gave a rich and vibrant output. There was a bit of Moiré visible, but we were easily able to eliminate it using the controls provided. In the regulation tests though, there was a slight expansion and contraction of the screen. Now the 753S had a perfect screen regulation and we were a touch surprised to see the screen expand and contract here. Also, in the horizontal color registration test, there was a slight mismatch of color only along the left edge of the screen. In the other areas it was spot on. Other than that there were no noticeable bugs in this monitor.

The Samsung 793S is a good overall monitor and one of the best around, but not better than its predecessor. There are no real improvements or feature increments over the 753S in this model other than newer looks, which by no means are stunning. Maybe Samsung did not hear the old saying - If it ain't broke, don't mess with it. I mentioned earlier that the 753S was the best in its category by a fair distance. Well, Samsung has just managed to close that gap. It may still be the best basic 17" monitor around, but just about. It is currently available for a street price of Rs. 6,100 with a three-year warranty, but the price should soon drop to around Rs. 5,500 in a month's time once the stock shortage issue is sorted out. A good buy in spite of its minor shortcomings.

I am surprised why monitor review does not consider important parameters like Safety regulations certification e.g. MPRII, TCO 99, etc. I would also like you to include the links for testing software like DisplayMate in this case. Hence someone like me can download the same an do our own testing of different models.

I am a techncian an I am have a problem where the syncmaster793s samsung is giving a brown reddish line smearring across the screen some times. can you tell me why is this. I need to know because we sold about 20 and 9 out of the 20 have this problem. Ok I have return again to let you all know that I found out what is causing the problem, but I have bad news for you all unless you can find yourself a picture tube from a other monitor that you know that do not have any kind of picture tube problem and can be line up with the CRT socket, You will never get that problem rectified. When you tap the tube you will ether see the brown reddish line appear or fade out of site. And trust me on this because if you look at the last date I have send the first text about this problem you will notice it took me quite a while to rectified this because of the number of checks and error before finding out the real problem is not the CRT socket or any other external parts that contribute to the tube. For those how work on TV back in the days of the time daytron and Sharpe TV when the set get very old the tubes begin to fade in sharpness and some times according to the gun that fail first in the tube you will see a off set in colors. So people the tube on that particular model monitor have a defect. But other wise the monitor shows very nice I give you that.

The IC radiator problem is caused by what? Accumulated dirt in some minor gap? Rust? Heat expansion? Or a melted solded point? My question is related with the solution, if it's not a a melted solded point then a contact cleaner can solve the problem, I hope!

i have a similar problem with 753s. it used to give rainbow colours which the company tech resolved. now it is beyond warranty and off and on it loses red colour. then it comes back again. can anyone help? i have changed the lead; tapping it [as suggested by a well-wisher] does not help; the red colour is lost very randomly; playing with hw acceleration does not help.

by Indi, Nagpur, India, on Jun 23, 2006 02:04 PM, Report abuse

Most probably it is the circuit board mounted on the picture tube "neck" which is causing the problem. There is a "valve base" on this board which fits on the picture tube pins. Either the base is sitting loosely on the picture tube or the base contacts have got oxidised (resulting in poor and intermittent contact) or the picture tube pins themselves may have been oxidised which also results in the same problem. It just requires some "cleaning" with fine sandpaper. HOWEVER PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS NOT TO BE ATTEMPTED BY AMATEURS AS NOT ONLY IS IT A HIGH VOLTAGE CIRCUIT ( EVEN AFTER MONITOR IS SWITCHED OFF THE HIGH VOLTAGE CAN REMAIN) BUT ALSO THE PICTURE TUBE IS VERY DELICATE AT THIS POINT AND CAN CRACK AT SLIGHTEST PRESSURE.

Most often, bad contacts and humidity caused issues can be easily solved by sparaying the whole board with electronic contact cleaner such as Kontakt, Lubi Limp 2000, or similar. You don't have to touch any part of the circuit, just open the case. No harm will be made to the electronics.

yeah! Samgsung is still a best buy when i wanted to go for a decent monitor, i had a choice, Samgsung and LG, but the problem with LG is that after some time i dont know why the LG monitor doest function well and i cant see my DVD movies as good as i see in Samgsung, another reason is i enquired the cyber cafes as to which monitor is best and they told that Samgsung is best, when enquired to sellers about comparing LG and Samgsung surprisingly they told that both the companies actually get their job work done by one company in China..yet this EG spends lots of money in endorsments, sponsorships to cricket world cup, but samgsung isnt doing it and has good hard case or panel with it, if you observe the only drawback with Samgsung is it has the menu on the right side, where as LG has on front, other wise, Samgsung runs for years (ask your cyber face owner) and its build in such a way that it looks flat, the reason when you're watching movies in your PC go for Samgsung

I've had the SyncMaster 793mb for about 10 months without any problems. Then like magic I got the lines, only for a short while before it heats up though.. But the problem that bugs me is the blackish flashing I'm getting with my new ATI radeon X1600pro video card.. Like a fool I figured updating my bios would fix it and just my luck the flash program kills my bois.. So I put the card in my backup computer with the same monitor and I still get the flashes..

by Miles, Tasmania, on Jul 27, 2005 04:21 PM, Report abuse

I have 2 with this problem as well. I believe it is probably a loose connection inside, as a slap on the side cures it temporarily. Does anybody know how to get the cover off? The two slots on the top mystify me. I have tried sticking things in them to release a catch of some sort but nothing happens, even though it seems to be pressing against some sort of spring.

by Stuart Nicholls, London, England, on Sep 08, 2005 03:48 AM, Report abuse

I have the same stupid problem. I even sent my monitor back to samsung to get another one back, and the monitor they gave me still had the problem! this seems to be a problem in general across all syncmaster monitors because i have the syncmaster 793MB. Ridiculous that they haven't recalled all the monitors for such an obvious defect.

by Seto, san jose, on Sep 12, 2005 06:55 AM, Report abuse

It can be fixed temporarily by causing some elecrical glitch. The problem occurs when the current is low, which causes the dodgy connection to become jittery. You might try some or all of the following. All are only temporary solutions I'm afraid. 1. Turn contrast and brightness up to maximum. This increases the current which seems to clean the dodgy contact. 2. Switch onto an application which can show a full white screen. I use Opera and a plain white HTML page (<html><body bgcolor="#ffffff"></body></html>), and switch between 'Window' and 'Full Screen' mode with F11. This usually works. 3. Switch off, then on again after 1 second. This causes an electrical spike which may clear it up. Sometimes I do still resort to slapping it on the side. A gentle slap towards the rear seems to work best. Shame, because it's the best monitor I've ever had, when it's working!

well, 15" is fine if you are really tight on money. Since you are going for a upgrade 17" is the bare minimum. I am sure you will thank me once you get the 17" monitor. It makes hell lot of a difference as viewing comfort is concerned. One more suggestion, get a black monitor. It has its advantages, especially if you are watching a movie at night. If you can pay 7800rs and want a great color experience then get the magicbright samsung 17" monitor.

ya...even i agree with what raja said....u have to go in for a 17" black one.... about the viewing experience, yes a 15" may seem good but only when you have not watched the 17" much....once you go over to 17", you will never turn bak to a 15"..... and see, 15" monitor are really absolete....so u might be wasting more money than what you tried to save....a 17" is the answer....

After reading your review and using the BenqG 776 I know that I have been duped badly. This Benq G776 is not a true flat and it does not have that good a picture compared to the Samsung.I wish that you had reviewed the Samsung earlier.
