Samsung 2233sw LCD Monitor

Samsung 2233sw LCD Monitor

Sudeep Naik, Jan 21, 2009 1908 hrs IST

This LCD monitor has a 16:9 aspect ratio and features a full HD resolution of 1920x1080.

Great design and looks, Sharp picture quality, Good color and skin tone reproduction, Aggressive pricing.

No bundle DVI-D cable, More than usual Back light bleeding, Slight mismatch in HCR test.

The smooth and sleek T220 by was a great looker for sure and it did offer better quality than most other monitors. However, it had a 16:10 panel that had a maximum resolution of 1680x1050. The 2233sw on the other hand has a 16:9 aspect ratio and features a full HD resolution of 1920x1080. To know more about its features, we've put the 2233sw to test and here's our take on it.

Design

SAMSUNG's SyncMaster 2233SW has a 22-inch display and slim design that is both gorgeous and space saving. It has a smooth, glossy bezel much like the T220. There are some differences in design though. Unlike the T220, which was a miniature replica of Samsung's series 6 LCD TVs, the 2233sw lacks the Touch of Color bezel. Instead, it has a smooth glossy piano finish.
A small blue light placed at the center under the "Samsung" stamp indicates whether the monitor is ON or OFF. The power and OSD buttons are placed at the side of the monitor. As compared to the touch sensitive buttons of the T220, these are mechanical and have the labels embossed onto them. Since the embossing isn't in a different color, reading the labels is a really difficult task.

The panel stands on a sturdy piano finish stand that firstly, is difficult to connect and, secondly, doesn't allow the monitor to swivel, giving it only a small amount of tilt instead. Be as it may, the stand is sturdy and holds the panel well in place and can withstand minor bumps and shakes.

The back of the monitor for some reason has a neat flowery design. It has a DVI-D and a D-Sub (VGA) port for connectivity.

Features

The Samsung 2233SW comes with a 22-inch panel that has a maximum resolution of 1920x1080. Yes, Full HD! It has a response time of 5 ms, contrast ratios of 1000:1 (typ) and 15000:1 (dynamic) and has a maximum brightness of 300 cd/m2. Viewing angles are 170 degree (horizontal) and 160 degree (vertical).

Special features include Samsung's proprietary MagicBright, Image Size, Color Effect, MagicTune and Safe Mode (down scaling in UXGA) and DVI with HDCP.

What all these technologies result into is a set of viewing presets for different scenarios like Cinema or Movie mode, Internet mode, Text mode, etc. My experience with these presets has never been a good one and I suggest not to fiddle around with these. In fact you can buy a DVI-D cable and use that to connect the computer to the monitor, as the DVI port automatically selects the best resolution and brightness/contrast values; something like an Auto Adjust mode.

I am using this monitor with a Nvidia 9800 GT card and I can play games like Batman: Arkham Asylum at full settings at 19020 x 1080 with ease.

I have a lower end graphics card (nVidia 7300) as of now. Is it possible to maintain aspect ratio and show black bars (on all 4 sides of the screen) when playing in low resolutions like (1024 x 768)

> Gamers, once again, you'll need a powerful graphics card if you want to play computer games at Full HD resolution. While that is true, I wanted to note that I had no problems playing games in lower resolutions - it stretches the image conveniently and pretty much looks like a console.

Just bought one and it's looking awesome. Really, you need a powerful graphics card to run the games........just be aware of that.
