With MP3 players becoming a common sight in the market, many manufacturers have come to realize that a stand-alone MP3 player does not hold the same appeal today as it did a couple of years back. MP3 players are now in-built into phones, watches, cameras, and just about everything else including the kitchen sink; so why would anyone find any appeal in a small device that's good only for music playback.

S-Media has seem to have done their homework there and have released a cute new device called Butterfly, which does not only play MP3s, but also triples up as an FM radio and a voice recorder. Though the three functions don't seem to go too far away from each other, it's more than what I can say about a variety of "budget" MP3 players available in the market. So what's so unusual about this Butterfly? Read on...

Fluttering Away
The Butterfly comes packed in a thick, sturdy box containing the following (besides the S-Media Butterfly MP3 player itself): Headset, audio cable, USB extension cable, CD driver disk, user's manual, Rechargeable battery and a Neck-strap.

At first look the player appears somewhat bulkier than most conventional 128 MB MP3 players, but at a closer look you realize why it's so. The player opens up from one end, shaping itself up like a butterfly (just like the name suggests), to expose a pair of in-built speakers and a USB port to connect to your PC or Mac.

The front of the player has two small monochrome, backlit LCD displays and the sides of the player contain all the controls. If held right, the top side of the player has three jog switches - one for playback functions like play, forward, rewind, change track and pause; the second for menu and volume control, and the last switch for the hold function. The bottom of the player contains a button for power on/off and switching between MP3, FM Radio and Dictaphone modes. It also contains ports for audio input and headphones.

Speaking of which, the headphones are earplug-styled with a sleek silver finish. The headphone wire length is long enough to suit most purposes.
