[Review] Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

Well folks, there you have it. India's first review of the new Transformers movie by a Technology website!

Great Special Effects, Large scale battles, A genuine popcorn flick.

Shallow plot, Bad performances by the supporting cast.

In 2007, Transformers brought an age old franchise to the movie going audience, a gamble that paid off very well and proved to be a huge success. Director Michael Bay and executive producer, Steven Spielberg have teamed yet again for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, a movie best described as an action packed ride that goes around in circles. This movie is a prime example of what modern day movie making is all about; its filled with stunning special effects, loads of hip-hop talk, accurate and adequate product placement and a sexy leading lady who can hot-wire cars.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

The movie stars Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox and a whole lotta CG. The story picks up where the last one ended, with the Autobots acting as guardians of Earth, working in harmony with the US Army (who else) and defending the planet against the evil Decepticons. It s a plain and simple plot, which has been stretched to a rather lengthy two and half hours of repetitive camera work, unwanted drama and predictable plot-twists. Shia LaBeouf does what does best and that is act like a dude-in-distress, while Megan Fox just prances around the screen, looking better with every passing frame. The movie gives unwanted screentime to Sam Witwicky s parents and a new nerdy sidekick, these are irrelevant characters, but are present throughout the flick anyway.

By now I am sure that I have upset a large bunch of fans, but rest assured the movie will not disappoint you. The movie does have a ton of issues but it also has Optimus Prime beating the hell out of the Decepticons, which looks really cool. The CG is better than last time, with longer action sequences and more explosions. But just like the last movie, this one too is affected by bad camera work, as the bigger fight sequences can be quite confusing, with all the transforming robots fighting at the same time. The fast paced action can become quiet overwhelming, especially for those who haven t seen the last one. Overall the movie does boast of some really impressive action sequences especially towards the end with a visually stunning climax.

The actors don t have much to do, as half their time is spent running away from someone or something. Even then Shia LaBeouf has done a good job as Sam, his character goes through a rough phase, which was well executed by the actor. The supporting cast has very minimum dialogue, but some of it is very entertaining, while some of it is plain obnoxious. Michael Bay is getting very predictable, as he has repeated most of his traditional traits. But I would like to commend the guy on the scale of the movie. This a grand movie with some of the best large-scale battle sequences that I have come across.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

For true fans of the Transformer series this is yet another disappointing movie, but for a casual audience this is beyond perfect. The movie offers loads of entertainment; huge explosions and a really good look at Megan Fox, while compromising on a decent plot. This is the perfect movie to watch over the weekend, enjoy the fireworks and then move on, if you are looking for a mature thought provoking feature film, rent City of God.

There is certainly an IMAX theatre in mumbai, and there are in several other cities, but the paid preview was held only at the theatre at Hyderabad.

a shallow movie with loads of cg and nothing concrete to talk bout...it is as revealing as the leading ladys ever present cleavage from all angles! guess it is time m.b grows up and gives us something better than just big set pieces...shia labeouf is a victim of his previous successes...always gets saddled with some sad flick or the other. and fans of transformers got to move to a better kind of film-making a la the dark knight!

The Hyderabad release is not fake, but it was an IMAX exclusive release. This is the general cinema release. Both are different
