Rainbow Six Vegas 2 (PC Review)

The online package is worth every penny and makes the game worth buying

Great cover system, smart AI makes a good squad, enjoyable squad-based combat, commendable online/multiplayer package

No major upgrades from the previous game, long load times

It's been a while since I wrote a PC game review. In today's console driven world, finding a PC game is very difficult. To be honest, I'm a PC gamer at heart; I grew up on Doom, Half Life, Starcraft, and Duke Nukem. However, these days, I'm used to switching to my consoles for games; PC has become a mere "hub" for MMORPG/download. As a result, when I got my copy of R6V2, I was really excited to be able to gun down terrorists using a mouse and keyboard, and not those annoying analogs. The game is a follow-up to 2006 smash hit R6V or Rainbow Six: Vegas. This time around, the R6 team is heading back to Sin City to gun down a few more terrorists, with marginally improved graphics, slightly better AI but very similar gameplay. I will elaborate my thoughts in the paragraphs below, so read on.

Summary

The game takes place a few years before the original R6V. This time, we have a new protagonist called Bishop. Under his command are two new recruits including Logan Keller (R6V's protagonist). The mission is to rescue a hostage but it goes off really bad as one of the squad members disobeys an order. The terrorists try to escape, and your mission is split into two -- killing the rest of the terrorists and diffusing a bomb. The level ends once the bomb is diffused and the game jumps five years ahead. Now there are new squad members and you are informed that Logan Keller is handling another mission in Mexico. Thus, basically the game takes place before and after the first game.

The single player plot is a typical mix of dramatic situations and clich s; the game shines in the multiplayer. However, the single player is by no standards bad; you'll enjoy killing the terrorists and following orders in a scenario that will remind of the previous game.
