Prototype is a fine example of a new-age action game, high on quantity but low on quality. Don't get me wrong, it's a fun game and very rewarding but it gets old very quickly, which is the biggest issue with the game. But let's not get into the cons so early on, this game still deserves accolades for being the most destructive game this year. The story revolves around Alex Mercer, who wakes up in a morgue, clueless about his whereabouts. He escapes the morgue and is off on a mission to recover his lost memory and to find out why all of a sudden he's invincible and mutated.
This leads to a string of missions and flashbacks that dig deeper into Alex's past, but 10-12 hours later, you are still confused. In a nutshell, Prototype is an open world game that puts you in the middle of a highly infected New York. A new Viral outbreak is turning citizens into mutated maniacs, and while the military is trying to cover up and control the outbreak, a new threat called Alex Mercer is doing the rounds of the city.

Alex is a living, breathing monster keen on causing as much havoc as possible. The first 10 min of gameplay lets you play as a fully developed Alex Mercer, who can destroy virtually anything and weapons, choppers, nothing works on this guy. I will be completely honest, a fully upgraded Alex gives you more power than you can handle, even in a game, and that's what makes Prototype special.
Alex starts off with a few basic powers, but quickly you will earn upgrades that change the game completely. 20 min into the game and I was able to run on walls, jump much higher and fly short distances. Alex gets points for completing various objectives and these points can be used to buy better abilities. The abilities are split into various categories like combat, defense, survivability and so on. Upgrading requires many points but surprisingly you earn points quite quickly, which really keeps you hooked onto the game.
Alex is also a shape-shifter, which most geeks would know is a really cool ability to have. Alex can modify his body to develop claws, a shield and even a large boulder type contraption that Alex uses to create shock-waves. Alex's arsenal of mutated abilities is really impressive, it's a huge list, but will take some time to acquire. The combat gets more intense much later in the game, as the enemies get tougher and attack in larger numbers. Alex uses a really intuitive aiming system that helps him lock-on to enemies and tear them to pieces.

The system works really well when his enemies attack in large numbers, he has the option to get rid of the big ones first and then focus on the rest. The biggest problem with having so many abilities is keeping up with the button combinations, and this is one area where the keyboard can be a big pain. You can switch between the primary abilities using a wheel system that allows you quick switch. It's really helpful when deciding if you want to slice open your enemy or crush him into pulp. Alex also possesses a rather unique ability that allows him to consume his targets and take on their appearance. Alex also consumes their memories and can access them if needed.
