PowerSafe 400 Watts SMPS

PowerSafe 400 Watts SMPS

Ameya Dalvi, Jul 02, 2004 0000 hrs IST

The PowerSafe 400 Watts SMPS is an exact replica of its 500-Watts sibling.

Sturdy Construction, Dual fans for additional ventilation, Tons of connectors, Three-year warranty

Slightly expensive, No SATA power connectors

Just a few days back we had reviewed the 500 Watts SMPS from PowerSafe. That had ample power, but was more suited for servers primarily due to its high cost. And also any user looking to build a reasonably powerful PC would not be able to utilize the full potential of that SMPS. So why spend extra for it? Instead buy something with a little less power, but with similar features and significantly lower cost. That's exactly what we have here for you today.

Before we proceed, you might want to have a look at the review of the PowerSafe 500 Watts SMPS, as this review has a few references to that article due to the similarity between the two products.

The PowerSafe 400 Watts SMPS is an exact replica of its 500-Watts sibling, with the same sturdy aluminium construction and the golden finish and two fans, each located on either side of the SMPS, providing good ventilation. The number of connectors also remains the same - eight Molex connectors, two floppy connectors and 20-pin and 4-pin power plugs. No SATA power pins in this one either. This power supply too has passed quality standards like FCC, TUV, CSA, UL, and CE. Just like its elder bro, it boasts of features like Short-circuit protection, Over-current protection and Over-power protection. To be precise, this power supply unit is exactly like the 500-Watts model in terms of looks and features, except for the total power output (obviously).

That's it for its physical attributes. Now it's time for the test. As always, we connected most of the test devices at our disposal to this SMPS. This time the device count was unfortunately lesser by one, as one of our hard drives died just before I started with the tests, 'sob'. But still, the number of devices attached can compete with any sane Power PC that one would look to build. The device list includes three hard drives, two DVD-Writers, one floppy drive, an Audigy 2 Platinum EX with the external Audigy drive, and finally a 9800 Pro all connected to an Intel 865 PE motherboard running a Pentium-4 3.06 GHz HT CPU with 512 MB of DDR RAM. We ran this setup for eight hours at a stretch and repeated this for three consecutive days. And there were no surprises. Everything worked perfectly fine without any crashes or power related issues. And the SMPS fans were smooth and silent. All in all, this is a very good product.

And finally the price. The PowerSafe 400 Watts SMPS is available at the street price of Rs. 1,900 with a three-year warranty. Though it is a whole Rs. 1500 cheaper than the 500-Watts variant, I would still term it slightly expensive for mass acceptance. Rs. 1,500 or there about would have been an ideal price tag. However, it remains an excellent alternative to its Antec counterpart available for almost twice the price.

So for those looking to exceed the standard quota of devices for their PC, don't forget that you will need more power for smooth functioning. And of course, don't forget that there is a good option available in form of the PowerSafe 400 Watts SMPS to provide the same.

This PSU/SMPS will just not work. The GPU Card requires a 6-PIN Auxillary Power supply which cannot be made by using extra molex connectors. You will have to Opt for CM or Antec SMPS only. You are out of all the choices. This GPU detects if you have made 6 pin connections using molex connections and will not start at all. Kindly consider buying a CM / Antec SMPS.

first you check the earth voltage come to your system, you check the site, earthing is given to ur powersupplysection properly, and u taken the power from ur system from good company ups.without using ups,u connect the system directly to the power supply line, your system affects. you buy the 400w or 500w atx smps Enhance is the good brand, many good brand smps are available in main cities in karnataka at computer spares shops. cost is approximataly 500/- to 600/- or above or less.

The 230V specs is the voltage supply from your main electrical lines..standard in India. U should also give the power output in terms of watts and Amps for proper specification of SMPS. Regarding the noise, most likely your fan/s will need replacement and quickly.

i have a 865-based mobo system with Northwood 2.8GHz (intel's most power hungry CPU with 120W-peak), 2x512MBDDR2 RAM, HP CD-writer, 40GB ATA & 250GB SATA, NVIDIA6600GT-128MB. ALL THIS ON A 250W SMPS!!!! LISTEN GUYS AND GALS, ITS THE QUALITY THAT MATTERS. Check the power distribution on all the rails. Pay particular attention to the +12V rail, it should supply a minimum of 15A for today's systems. And that is why the latest SMPS come with TWO +12V power rails supplying in excess of 20A. Check out antrec's entire range, you will be amazed.Even their lowest end model BASIQ350W supply can take whatever yu thow at it.....3 HDDs-no problem (All IDE devices consume roughly 8-12W @+12V); High end graphic card say 6800GT, add another 120W (again +12V); the latest CPU -P4 120W (Core2Duo needs only 65W)...what else do u need????

What brand is your UPS, if its any local supply maal, then its crap. Changeover to battery power when the mains go off happens in a few millisecs and only APC and Powersafe can handle that for months/years.

My PC keeps freezing just after booting up or after few minutes of operation. Sometimes the monitor turns blank (black). This is not a virus or software bug as this problem occured in Linux too. My hardware vendor could not give any reason. He says SMPS is OK. He has rewired and cleaned the Cabinet. It is iBox which is 300W SMPS. Can anyone suggest a solution. Do I need to buy better SMPS. Thanks.

yes I searched the web & found that it is a rebadged DEER but in all the reviews of L&C branded PSUs there were no major issues with L&C PSUs most of the reviewres mentioned that it was lot better than any of DEER products The only problems they mentioned were lack of adequate connectors & Short length of connectors But the one I have (the same as the one in picture ) has 6 molex connectors 2 floppy connectors along with 24pin ATX connector & 4pin p4 CPU connector And its performance is more than Satisfactory as it maintains steady voltage and maintains it very close to desired level

The Powersafe 400W avaiable in Mumbai is different from the one mentioned here. It costs just 1425/- but, 1>It does not have 8 molex connectors, just 4 2>The location of the second fan is different. Its at the bottom while the one shown above has it in the front. The main issue is the number of molex connectors. Also no where on the unit is it written that the supply is a 400W one! The Kunhar peripherals tech. guy said that it had 6 connectors. That will do too. but the units available here have just 4. I was suggested to go for the Y-cable but I have had very bad experiences with them in the past. Sometimes the hard-drive just shuts off! Also there is no point using cheap Y-cables with such a good supply. Is there any way to get the supply identical to the one shown above? If not Powersafe, is there any other brand?

Only someone who is ignorant of the features and performance of ANTEC would ever think of comparing ANTEC to any other power supply.

The design for the smps is wrong. The 2nd fan needs to be below - facing the CPU like a overhead chimney, when installed. Cooling depends on forced convection of air in a cabinet. With the current design , airflow sucked in from the front vents of the cabinet is flows out from arounhd near where the cdroms are installed and finally out tru the smps - rather than directing airflow from over the cpu fan - and finally away and out of the smps. This is not part of the recommended amd system design.

Hi, I have a 1 yr old cabinet with 400W SMPS supply, i am not sure if i am using all the power form it since i have AMD Athlon XP with 2 HDD and 256 MB RAM and a DVD writer with it, however my question is since my SMPS is 400W does that mean i my UPS should be alteast 400W and above in power output ? I tried a 600VA UPS but system boots on power failure and that too when i didint connect monitor to UPS. Do i need to downgrade my SMPS power since i am not using its full 400W. APC UPS site suggest for my configuration that i need only 500 VA UPS ..

Hi ! I am In A city Called chandigarh, my comuter is acting weired, sometimes it just turns off, without shutting down, other times, I hear a hard disk spinning down and the system hangs. I think an SMPS problem, have a 300 WATT Frontech ATX SMPS but thinking of switchinig to this one, Two questions 1) is this problem of mine SMPS related ? 2) is your SMPS available in Chandigarh ?

an smps is fitted inside the cabinet to provide the requisite power to different components in the computer, whereas a ups is an external device that supplies power to the entire computer even when there is power failure.

ANYONE plz tell me where to buy this In Lucknow. or if from Mumbai then how

by Saurav, Lucknow, on Jul 05, 2004 11:31 AM, Report abuse   Reply

Dear Saurav, We can not make the SMPS available in lucknow.U can directly purchase from our bombay office. For co-ordination u can mail me at salesbom@kunhar.com

by Kunal Shah, Mumbai, on Jul 06, 2004 03:38 PM, Report abuse

The price is a bit high still, really Rs. 1500 would have been a really god price, as many buy SMPS only ones & they are not upgraded often, the connector numbar is good, & lack of SATA connector is not an issue as HDDs with SATA connector area still hard to find. Can someone from Kunhar Periferals or TechTree tell me how can I buy it in Lucknow UP, or can I buy it directly from them, plz give me details at gxsaurav@indiatimes.com
