It's time to have a look at an 8X model from a near forgotten giant in the optical drives arena

Good DVD burn speeds, Excellent DAE and data transfer speeds, Attractive pricing

CD burn speeds restricted to 24X, No bundled software

While we were busy testing the Dual Layer DVD burners last week, the prices of standard 8X DVD-Writers seem to have dipped further to the sub-6.5K level. Not bad news at all. We have already covered a handful of 8X DVD burners from the big boys like Lite-On, Sony and Plextor. Now, it's time to have a look at an 8X model from a near forgotten giant in the optical drives arena, namely Pioneer. If you remember, it had the famous DVD-ROM drive based on the slot mechanism (rather than the tray used in most) more than a year back. It was an amazing performer. Whether Pioneer can recreate the same magic when burning DVDs, let's find out.

The Pioneer DVR-107D is a dual format DVD-Writer, capable of burning DVD+R and DVD-R media at a maximum speed of 8X, while DVD-RW and DVD+RW can be burnt at up to 4X. Pre-recorded DVD-ROMs can be read at 12X max, but the read speed for DVD recordable and rewritable media is restricted to 8X. It supports a maximum read speed of 40X for all types of CD media, but the write and rewrite speeds for CD-R/RW stand at 24X. If you have a separate faster CD-Writer, it isn't an issue at all, but if you plan to burn CDs on this one, you will have to wait for over a minute more for each CD you burn.

The drive sports a 2 MB buffer (which Nero InfoTool shows as 2000 KB) and the Buffer Underrun Protection technology. The drive uses a mixture of CLV (Constant Linear Velocity) and Zone-CLV technique to write to different optical media and CAV (Constant Angular Velocity) to read CDs and DVDs. Also this drive does not support DVD+R Dual Layer media, but it can read Dual layer DVD-Video disks meaning you can play your DVD movies on this drive.

Talking about the bundle, wait a minute, what bundle? There isn't one here. This is an OEM product and all you get is the drive and an information leaflet. Don't look for software CDs or Blank media here. That's one way of keeping the cost down and a good option if you already have a DVD burning and playback software. Else, you will need to buy one separately unless you choose to use a freeware.

The problem isn't the hardware it's the software you are using.

I bought this DVD writer some time back and I had problems with the first DVD-R I bought. I tried Techcom 4.7 GB DVD-R For General use and it didn't work. Nero would say (after a minute or so) that this format isn't supported on the drive. Then I tried a Cursor DVD+RW and this works perfectly well. I am wondering what brands should I try. Can anyone help me out here? I don't want to invest more money on DVD-Rs that I won't be able to use or exchange. Thanks for the review.

I've used Princo, Moser Baer and Samsung (all DVD-R) at 4x without any problems. This was before I upped the fw, and after that I could burn a Princo at 8x. And I've got a couple of MB DVD+RW, painful 2.4x ones...

The drive did come with a CD, but as far as I remember, there was nothing interesting on it. Anyway everyone uses (and has) Nero, so how does it matter? About the performance, well, everything is top notch, except that the drive can't overburn even 1mb. All through my Lite-On life Ive been stuffing 703-705mb on a CD and now I have to actually shave off the excess and make sure it doesnt exceed 699mb. This is the single most irritating part about the drive. Far more annoying than the 24x burn speed limit, which IHMO, is just a differnce of a minute or two and I have that much of time really...

Hi Ameya, How long have we got to wait till the DVD formats gets standardised ? Do you really think that time is ripe enough to buy a DVD writer ? DVDs are not at all a very popular medium as most people do not have the drives (like me). Lastly, I brought my CD writer from ASUS on 2000-01. Within a year the prices dropped like anything ; the writing speed became faster and can you believe I can't use CD-RWs that come with a tag "For High Speed Drives only". Please, I do not want to fall in the same trap. Rather than buying, wait till the prices come down to such a level that we can buy a drive a month from our pocket money only (ASUS CD-R drives cost 650 bucks apiece these days).

Hi, This DVD writer supports all the formats except for DVD-RAM, it is a good model. If you are interested, buy it. DVD drive speed will not increase like CD RW because the CD writing speed 1x is 150 KB / Sec but the same DVD R 1x speed is 1500 KB / Sec, so there will not be a markable difference within a year or two. This my opinion. I am technical support engineer for MNC. Regards Mark
