With DVD players getting cheaper and more feature packed everyday, the decision to choose between them keeps getting tougher. Let's see what this new player has to offer.

The DVP5996K is a new DVD player from Philips, which comes with a host of features and has a stylish slim body.

The last player from Philips was the DVP3266 and this one seems to be very similar in features except for support for DivX Ultra format.

Bundle

The DVP5996K comes bundled with the following accessories:

Instruction manual

Quick start guide

HDMI cable

It's nice to see a HDMI cable included in the package as the LG player we reviewed a little while back didn't have one.

I've just bought the player and am having problems playing back some Mp4 movie files on the 5996 anyone knows why? or what i need to do? I have a pioneer DV 220 but the problem is that it doesn't display the tracks it just gives you the track duration, lapsed time and the disc duration and lapsed time. HELP! ANYONE!

The cons says : "Does not play QPEL, Xvid, WMV." I dont think this is completely true. Check out page 20 of the user guide which says, The unit plays: – WMV i les on CD-R(W)/ DVD+R(W) – The i le extension has to be ‘.wmv’. – DivX® i les on CD-R(W)/ DVD+R(W) – The i le extensions has to be ‘.AVI’, ‘.MPG’ or ‘.MP4’. – DivX® Certii ed, DivX® Ultra Certii ed – Q-pel accurate motion compensation – Global Motion Compensation (GMC) playback Even xvid files play fine, I have played so many.

I purchased this model a few days back. It does play both WMV and Xvid. Although none of the Xvid rips i tried used Qpel or GMC. But I am facing a queer problem with Xvid files' playback. Initially the playback is perfect. But after an some time (random), video pauses and the player hangs. There's nothing i can do after that except pull the plug and restart. If i replay the movie, it might hang at a different part of the movie. This happens more often when i try to fast-forward through a movie. This is quite irritating. Has anyone ever faced this problem?

Try this: Go to Setup -> Preference Page Enter 138931 using the numeric keypad The current region is displayed on the screen. Use the up/down keys to change this to to 0, press OK.

I went to purchase this player and took along with me my WD 120 GB USB Hard drive. I had .avi movie files which i tested and i observed a judder in moving scenes, observed more judder in HDMI connection. Compared the same with LG 388 and there was np juddering in it for the same movie files. But LG 388 took 15 minutes time to scan my Hard drive. Otherwise the picture quality was amazing. At present i am holding my decision to buy this player because of juddering.

You should go with Philips. It will turn out to be a value for money. What is juddering?

by sidds83, Pune, on Jan 13, 2009 12:52 PM, Report abuse

Juddering, I can simplify and say there were jerks in moving scenes.
