Philips Go Gear SA-1356/97

It's a lighter, it's a Swiss Army knife, no wait, it's an MP3 player!

Stylish looks, Good voice recorder.

Bad reproduction of lows and highs, Low transfer speed, Prone to smudges, Battery life, Display never goes off, Sluggish interface.

Build Quality and Design

Like I said before, the design of this audio player is highly reminiscent of a cigarette lighter. The Swiss Army Knife thought hits you when you look at the player from a certain angle and factor in the red-silver color scheme. The guys at Philips have built a really stylish player here. The glossy exterior coupled with the eye-catching red-silver combo is definitely an eye-catcher. In fact, the only thing marring the perfect exterior is the printed serial number tag just above the USB connector.

The player possesses an average number of buttons on its exterior. On the top of the player are three buttons - Record, Loop Setup and Menu. The Loop Setup button basically lets you manually set up a loop within a track. The main control buttons are fashioned in a D-Pad. The USB connector is of the slide out variety and lets you connect your player directly to your computer without the need for an extra cable. The other two exterior things to note are the Lock toggle and the reset hole. At the back of the player is the lanyard loop hole. The headphone jack is adjacent to the mic hole and is situated on top of the player when held vertically.

The player may look flimsy and flashy and feel light but worry not, for this is a sturdy player. The discreetly hidden screen gives the player a really good look and also gives the screen some extra protection. The D-Pad was a little shaky in its socket but there seems to be no danger of it falling off. The only thing that could fall off and get lost in this player is the USB port's tiny rubber dust cover. Since it must be removed to connect the player to the computer, it's not hard to imagine it getting lost. Philips has thought ahead though, and has provided two extra USB covers. Thoughtful, but what happens when they get lost too? This is important since this player is sure to see a lot of use as a USB drive.

On the whole, I really liked the player's build quality and design. It looks good, feels sturdy and the only real vulnerability, the USB cover, has been addressed.

The highly polished screen is a killer for looks but makes the display unviewable when exposed to even low sunlight.
