Now if only the speakers were as good as the rest of it...

Good picture quality, good design and build, Ambilight, Perfect Pixel, ClearLCD, DNM, USB connectivity

Contrast ratios could have been better, USB multimedia port does not support movies or videos, speakers lack power

Features

Video
The TV has a 16:9 aspect ratio, and an anti-reflective screen. It supports a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080p. It has a good 3 ms response time and can display 4 trillion colors (14-bit RGB).
The panel has a maximum brightness of 550 cd/m2, and a contrast ratio of 1200:1 (static) and 8000:1 (dynamic). It has viewing angles of 176 degrees (both horizontal and vertical). Philips has incorporated picture enhancement techniques like Perfect Pixel HD Engine, HD Natural Motion, 100Hz Clear LCD, and more.

Ambilight

Ambilight at work

Unique to Philips, Ambilight projects a soft light glow onto the walls around the TV set, which automatically changes to match the colors and brightness of the picture. Ambilight improves perceived contrast, color, and detail, giving you the sensation that you're looking at a wider picture. It has also been proven to reduce eye-strain by providing a more relaxing viewing experience.

ClearLCD
ClearLCD technology involves the use of a scanning backlight to kill motion blur, thereby producing incredibly smooth pictures. It mainly improves the black levels and eliminates speckles of background noise.

The Double Frame Rate Insertion in Clear LCD works at a refresh rate of 100Hz. It increases the sharpness of motion reproduction to more than twice that of a conventional LCD, resulting in a response time of 3 milliseconds.

HD Natural Motion
Ambilight is one of the most obvious features; HD Natural Motion (HDNM) is easily the most interesting. HDNM is a process designed to eliminate motion jitter. Before we go ahead, let's see what motion jitter is.

One of the biggest difficulties with progressive scan displays like LCDs is interpreting the interlaced video signals most DVDs and television broadcasts use. When done poorly, this signal conversion can create "jitter," resulting in visible jerkiness as the frame pans or objects move across the screen.

Some manufacturers have tried, in the past, to correct jitter by either doubling the lines in each field of the interlaced image or by doubling the frames in progressive images to create extra frames, giving the illusion of smooth motion. This works well on slow-moving or static subjects, but if the motion is too fast, the eyes perceive the extra frames as jitter.

HDNM is Philips' adaptation of a technology originally used in its CRTs to correct the jitter issue. It takes a different approach: it analyzes the content of the current and successive fields to produce an entirely new field. The new field is an estimation of the path of motion which is then used to "fill the gap" between the existing signal and the required frame rate of the display.

HDNM not only eliminates jitter, it also removes a good amount of motion blur. It creates smooth motion and crisp images; the results of the use of HDNM are clear even with standard-definition videos.

Perfect Pixel
Perfect Pixel HD Engine offers the unique combination of ultimate sharpness, natural detail, vivid colors and smooth natural motion on all qualities of HD, standard TV signals, and multimedia content for high-definition displays. Each pixel of the incoming picture is enhanced to better match the surrounding pixels, resulting in a more natural picture. Artifacts and noise in all sources from multimedia to standard TV and also in highly compressed HD content are detected and reduced, ensuring that the picture is clean and sharp.

(We at Techtree are always ready to help you fulfill your pathological craving for things like these.) Sudeep most techtree readers are normal ppl. not pathologically brain dead. Good prose will only enhance your review. Somewhere U have lost the plot about pricing of this so called review ? a full HD 1080p- 47 inch for 118k in India- only in your dreams. Please make background price checks before posting reviews done hypothetically. Incidentally where did U get the Philips 47PFL9532-98 LCD TV for review ?- last i asked Philips they only had 42inch for 120k.

47-incher, the Philips 47PFL9532/98 for 1,19,000 is practically a steal- is this street price ? or company price- because company web site states the price of 42 inch model at 1,29,000 for 42PFL9532-98.
