Philips 42PF9831 LCD TV

Philips 42PF9831 LCD TV

Sudeep Naik, Oct 23, 2006 1400 hrs IST

The Philips 42-inch LCD TV is a beast that will surely grip the mind of any sane man.

Great build quality, 42-inch screen, Ambilight, Pixelplus, ClearLCD, DNM, Impressive picture and sound quality, High feel-good factor.

Too big and heavy for a 42-inch TV, No 1080p support, Very expensive.

The boom in the LCD TV segment has prompted many manufacturers to launch their high-end models here in India as well. In effect, the kind of TVs that we used to see with dropped jaws in Hollywood movies or glam magazines, and imaginatively tag it as sci-fi are actually available and being sold at the store down the block.

The Philips 42-inch LCD TV is one such beast that will surely grip the mind of any sane man.

First Impressions

Even before you switch the Philips 42PF9831 ON, you know it's gorgeous. The first thing that catches the eye is its 42 inch (diagonal) screen. Of Course, there is more to it than meets the eye. It is surrounded by a thick black panel and a finish of glowing edges. An array of connectors at the back and on the side allows you to connect almost any imaginable A/V device to the TV.

And at 114 x 1279 x 872 mm (LxBxH), it looks superb whether wall-mounted or free-standing. But, 38 kilograms can be a little too much to handle, so be careful where you mount it.

Is the TV format in the US different from the one in India? Since we are relocating to India, we are bringing our LCD Vizio TV to India. Can we use it there with just a voltage converter (110V to 220V)?

by Neooptimist, Bangalore, on May 19, 2007 08:22 PM, Report abuse   Reply

You will have to buy a PAL to NTSC converter too.. how did you carry that to india? did you pay any customs duty?

by Althaf, NY, on Nov 18, 2007 11:52 PM, Report abuse

You can use the TV in India subject to the fact that first you need to connect your video source to an external TV Tuner box(kWorld has some excellent models). From the TV Tuner box you connect to any of the input sockets on TV other than the cable input(RF). This is the best possible way since you can use the Remote provided by the Tuner box to change channels. Other methods include using a DVD recorder with built in Tuner(PAL Tuner) and then connect your cable directly to DVD Recorder, take the output from DVD recorder to your TV. However, in this method you cannot change channels as easily as you can change with the first method.

by sadananda, bangalore, on Jun 30, 2008 10:09 PM, Report abuse

Besides the voltage converter, you will need one more thing. US uses NTSC and India uses PAL. So if you want to use your NTSC only Tv in india. There are 2 options. 1. A Multi format Video converter usually around $150 for a good one. or 2. A VGA box. Dish TV in india provide a package with a VGA Set top box and it works perfectly fine. No issues. All you need to check on your TV is weather it has a PC Input option (VGA input). I installed it yesterday on my Samsung LCD that i brought from the US and works perfectly fine. Costs Rs4000 for everything including 1 yr subscription.

LCD Televisions unlike Plastma televisions, dont have any phosphorus light thus need less power to operate. It also generates less heat than a traditional tv. Lastly they don't emit any radiation. There are several plus points for an LCD TV. They are, they dont have burn in static images, unlike Plasma. You can store an lcd tv in a high location and its no problem, but plasmas dont do well in higher altitudes. LCD Televisions also generally last more than 9 years, well more than the typical plasma based tv. Finally they are lighter in weight.

by Nischint Katoch, New Delhi, on Aug 21, 2007 04:48 PM, Report abuse   Reply

why would someone buy this tv when 42" plasma tvs are available for 80-90k range ( LG/Phillips/Panasonic etc.) Have a look arnd in vijay sales or encore ( city center , mumbai central) and you know the time for plasmas have arrived.

by saty, mumbai, on Oct 23, 2006 03:27 PM, Report abuse   Reply

Why would u buy mercedes, when you get the same 4 wheel car for 1/10 the cost. It supports 3ms, which most of your 80-90k TV dont support. The features mentioned make the TV worth, though many of these features aren't compulsory (eg Ambilight)

by SantaSingh, Punjab, on Oct 23, 2006 04:10 PM, Report abuse

U R absolutely right -philips price is out of this world & perhaps wise people will veer towards 42 inch plasmas for 80-90 k- which in any case have better picture

Philips 42PF9831 is a LCD TV with good resolution- but at the time review also TT must consider the price factor- all TV manufacturers including Philips are duping Indian public by setting VERY HIGH PRICES specially for India. In the US market there are not many sales for this Philips TV price being high at 2500 US $-( i.e. Rs. 1,13,000 ) BUT BEWARE in India we are privileged to be offered this at 2.65 lakhs- a premium price at 235% over US price. What is the matter Philips!! In a competitive environment like the US best selling 42 inch LCD TVs are $ 1299 i.e. 58.5k and even the premium ones like Sony 40 inch are in range of $ 2k- i.e. about Rs. 90k. India seems to be the market for lootery by Philips, Samsung, LG, Sony Etc etc. ?Beware of artificially high prices when U review TT.

by vijayshimla, Shimla 171001, on Oct 23, 2006 06:14 PM, Report abuse   Reply

But you also have to put in import duties which govt. charges on such elecronics equiptment..... Yes Companies do charge more for LCD/Plasma in India but other factors also add up to the final bomb of a price....

by Anonymous, Anonymous, on Oct 23, 2006 06:23 PM, Report abuse

The final bomb is engineered by the avaracious companies which are here to loot. Sirthe import duties etc are not that much !!

by vijayshimla, Shimla 171001, on Oct 23, 2006 07:15 PM, Report abuse

Even in Dubai you get a 32" LCD for 40K rs..and see the prices here..ridiculous..or the world thinks indian have more money to spend with IT boom or that we are duds !

by AnilKool, Bangalore, on Oct 23, 2006 09:45 PM, Report abuse

Spot-On Vijay! Absolutely right. We dont want the so-called "US" or "Dubai" product to be sold in India. When Philips has an established base in India, then why not sell it through Philips India?? whilst the ideal thing to do would be to manufacture (or make the final packaging) out here! Then the premium cost is reduced. Its just these guys taking advantage of low-contested market to sell them out here. As rightly put, we really have to put mind-over-matter and take the time to compare the prices of the same products elsewhere. May I ask TT to add this comparison price in US while you quote the price for products in India please. So that, only the people who're crazy for the first-day-buy can go buy it at that price!!

However, I would still agree that the policy of keeping price for the last para is not welcome. Maybe I do not want to read till the end. Maybe I would like to read ONLY if the device fits my budget. And I am sure price is not so trivial that it goes into the last para. Why not show it in the introduction?

The Latest on LCD TV prices from Digitimes the most authoritative source. Quotes for Philips-branded 42-inch LCD TVs have dropped to US$1,699 at Costco's website at the beginning of this month, while LG Electronics (LGE) is promoting its 42-inch models at US$1,999 at BestBuy. Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics is promoting its 40-inch models at US$1,799 at BestBuy, while Sony's Bravia-branded 40-inch models are priced at US$1,899 on Costco's website.
