With PDAs becoming a common accessory like the mobile phone, users are very keen on knowing which one will suit them best. For starters, this handheld fits budget users quite comfortably. Updating its previous version of the Zire, PalmOne has released the Zire 21.
Package and Specifications
Exactly identical to its predecessor in terms of looks, the only change is the number '21' included after the brand name and the image of the lady in the package cover. Weighing just 108g with a dimension of 111 x 73 x 15 mm, this white coloured handheld has a 160 x 160 pixel, 4-bit greyscale display screen. Powered by a 126 MHz TI (Texas Instruments) OMAP 311 ARM processor, the PDA has an 8 MB memory capacity (actual storage capacity - 7.2 MB), which is four times more than its predecessor to store applications, files and a bunch of addresses and appointments. Operating on the Palm OS v5.2.1, the handheld is supplied with a USB cable for HotSync with your desktop PC or notebook, a battery adapter, four power connectors and a stylus.
Additional accessories include the protective plastic cover for the screen, graffiti stickers and the software CD, which contains applications like Handmark PDA Money to update your financial status and an application to keep a track of birthdays and other reminders, while the games section consists of a war and Heart game.
Performance
The Zire 21 took three hours to recharge completely to come under full use. It consists of the standard applications available on most handhelds like the Address book, Date book, World clock, To Do List, Memo Pad, Expenses, Note Pad and Calculator. The other options include adjusting the contrast and the search function.
The handheld comes with two configurable hotkey buttons, two scroll buttons and a power button. At first glance, this handheld does not look striking because of the lack of a backlight. Obviously, it should have been included in this version of the Zire, but they have compensated it with further battery power.
The stylus taps well on the very-sensitive screen and it was pretty impressive even with the protective cover on the screen. Writing or drawing on the screen was also very fine, once you calibrate the stylus. The Graffiti is a very useful feature, which allows you to write in freestyle mode. Numbers were understood in a flash, while approximately 75 percent of the alphabets were understood with ease. The main screen can also be used as the writing pad apart from the actual writing screen at the bottom.
The PDA also offers other features like KeyLock, when the handheld is not in use, while the Sounds and Alerts feature is just an additional bonus. Don't even think of setting an alarm using your PDA, as I doubt you will ever get up with it because of the feeble sound even in highest mode. The alphabetical/numerical icon buttons can be used for easy typing just in case you don't like the freestyle writing.
The handheld can synchronize with a laptop or PC having a USB port. Transfer via Infrared is also possible. Transferring information to any other handheld close-by is also possible using the Beam function. Synchronization of the address book, memos and to do lists worked up to expectation after installing the required software. Even though the software interface is quite easy to understand, it's the transfer of information and data files that might confuse you. The Palm Reader software helps you read the books provided on the CD and books of that particular format available on the Web.
The place where the PDA loses points is the lack of a backlight, which is necessary taking into consideration that this is the second release of the Zire series. Expansion slots are also missing, which is very crucial. The blue rubber flap at certain times might get on your nerves and may force you to remove it.
Strictly for Budget users
To put it in simple terms, this handheld provides just the basic features for a price tag of Rs. 7,500. Since nothing else has been upgraded in this version of the Zire, apart from the memory capacity, this handheld might just give you a few surprises here and there.

I have an Agenda VR3 PDA with 16 MB FLASH (not RAM) , and 16 MB RAM. It doesn't have expansion options but cost me $99. This is a linux PDA and great for playing games and reading novels. You can get the specs from the web somewhere. I do not know whether the 8 MB listed here is flash or RAM, but if it is RAM, don't even consider buying this crap. It's plain junk in that case. If it is flash you can consider buying it, still not good enough though. Let me tell you that I think you need to be an engineer to use the VR3, it needs to be custom made by YOU, but then that's half the fun.

Sheesh what are you guys trying to do? you are comparing a Pocket PC with a low end Palm PDA. If you really wanna do some comparison, try comparing the Pocket PC with the Tungsten Series (Specially T3) and then you'll know what a cr@ppy device a pocket PC is. and the OS of PPC sux, no other word for it. It took me a month for me to learn to use it properly and for Palm OS you dont need to learn it, it is so damm easy. And BTW this is a low end model. What more can you ask from a 99$ PDA. C'mon think rationally.

That used to happen to me all the time. Sync your files, store a backup of your data on your computer. Uninstall the software, reinstall it and before you resynch your data, reset the unit. It should work.

Contact Suntronix in Chennai. I found them the best amongst all the PDA repair shop that I surveyed in India. I got mine Z72 repaired efficiently and at a reasonable price, just as I was about to junk it. You can safely courier it to them by Bluedart/Fedex (cost Rs 100/-). I currently dont see zire21 list in palmone india website. Though I got it from my client in US who bought it for about $100 = about 4300 INR, seems to me a good buy and perfect entry level PDA, just don't know why palm is not listing it on indian website. It should really promoste cheaper handhelds like these to penetrate Indian market as PDAs have not yet become the norm in India. hi. i recently purchased a zire21. when it says you need to initialy charge it for 3 hours does it mean the unit has to stay off? i turned the power off while charging but it turns on by itself after awhile. then when i disconnect the charger, it does not want to turn on. what's wrong with it? is the battery defective? thanks!!
