In the handheld computing world, things happen in weird ways. Sony licenses Palm's operating system for their handhelds; in that way, Sony depends on Palm. On the other hand, Sony is the one who innovated with Palm OS and added things like high-res screens, multimedia capabilities etc. to their handhelds, and taught Palm a few tricks; now, Palm depends on Sony, for innovation at least. Yet, Palm always betters Sony at implementation. Now, that's a perfect symbiotic relationship, but just until the third factor comes in, the thief. Microsoft keeps stealing tricks from both camps, and while at it, keeps bungling up the implementation.

Palm's Tungsten T3 is a perfect example of how Palm has improved on a trick it learnt from Sony. Palm never had a rectangular screen Layout PDA; they were always square (160 x 160 pixels for their old Palm OS 4 handhelds or 320 x 320 pixels for the newer Palm OS 5 ones). It seems it isn't hip to be square anymore, so Palm decided to make their new Tungsten T3 a true wide screen handheld, just like Sony's Clie NR70V. The problem was simple; the handheld would be too big to fit in a pocket easily, unless it was a foldable one.

Fold Schmold! Palm prefers to slide, as they've shown with their Tungsten T handheld. So the solution was simple, make a handheld the size of a standard Tungsten T, stretch the TFT display into the slide-revealed graffiti area, and viola, you have a tiny high-res handheld. And what a screen, sharp and crisp, and very bright, it is better than most other PDAs, maybe except the Tungsten C, which though is lower in resolution, offers slightly better colour balance, but that's a very minor difference anyway. To be precise, the T3 is 2/3rd the size of my last iPaq 5545, yet twice the usable number of pixels at 320 x 480 resolution when compared to the 240 x 320 resolution of the iPaq. It's so cool to walk into a meeting and slide that virtual graffiti area, start Kinoma player, and watch near-DVD quality movies in true wide-screen mode on your PDA!

The sliding input area has turned out to be a very effective way to reduce the size of the PDA, but is it reliable and sturdy? From what we've seen on the original Tungsten T, the system has proved to be quite reliable, though it does tend to get loose with time and usage, we haven't met anybody who has managed to completely destroy it with repeated usage. And it certainly is sturdier than the clamshell design on Sony's Clies, though not as sturdy as the Palm Tungsten C or the iPaq handhelds that have absolutely no moving hinges and parts.

And it ain't no slouch either, packing a 400 MHz Intel XScale processor with 64 Megs of RAM out of which the user can utilize 53 Megs, it is a monster by Palm standards. Read our review of the Tungsten C to find out why less memory is more when it comes to comparing Palm handhelds with their Windows Mobile counterparts. As for software, Palm has packed the handheld with their most recent version of Palm OS, 5.2.1, and the new improved PIM apps. Kinoma Player, a video player, and Documents To Go 6 Standard for full round-trip MS Office documents compatibility is also included, as is the new improved version of the Palm Browser. Fortunately, most of these programmes have been optimized for the increased display resolution, and you can use them in either portrait or landscape mode on the screen. The amount of real estate available for Web browsing in landscape mode is as much as half of a PC monitor running at 640 x 480, making this one of the best PDAs to surf the Web while you're away from your desk. Palm's innovative tray control bar that allows you to perform various functions like changing screen modes, opening the on screen keyboard or virtual graffiti area, or accessing features like backlight and time settings is an amazing addition making the handheld extremely easy to use.

As for features, the T3 packs them aplenty. Other than the basic IR port, SD/MMC/SDIO card slot and the Palm universal connector, it's got built-in Bluetooth support to interact with most popular Bluetooth mobile phones from Nokia and SonyEricsson, and more can be added. And the best part is, unlike the Tungsten C, which requires an external microphone and has a rather unconventional headset connector; the T3 actually has a standard headphone jack for an audio output, and a rather good one at that. It's a breeze to listen to MP3s on this handheld, and you can plug in almost any good set of headphones available in the market, even the Microphone is built-in, and provides excellent voice recording quality.

The large screen, powerful CPU, and all these features sure cost a lot when it comes to battery power, but even then, the T3 manages quite easily. The battery lasted us around five hours of continuous usage at medium brightness. To put that in perspective, if you use your handheld for around two hours a day, this one should last you a little more than two days without a recharge, pretty good when compared to the 3 days of the Tungsten C, the largest-batteries carrying Palm Handheld. And considering the fact that it recharges to 80% limit within 1.5 hours, that's not bad at all.

Overall, the T3 is total drool maal. The slide and size factor itself is beyond cool, let alone the features and the horsepower it packs! With a price of Rs. 29,900, it's a perfect balance between productivity and multimedia features, and most gizmo lovers will just love it! It sure deserves the spot of Palm's top consumer handheld.
