The Tungsten C, the epitome of 'Power' for all Palm Handhelds to look up to.

Powerful, WiFi Support, Built-in Keyboard

No standard stereo headphone out, only Nokia-type Headset connector

The Hardware
The Tungsten T was the first Palm OS 5 handheld, followed by the Camera-equipped Zire 71.

After that came the Tungsten C, the epitome of 'Power' for all Palm Handhelds to look up to. It runs on a 400 MHz Intel PXA255 XScale processor, the fastest ever for a Palm Handheld (or any handheld), and comes with 64 MB of RAM (52 MB, user accessible), significantly more than any other Palm Handheld till date. Also, it packs WiFi Internet access capabilities, and a thumb-keyboard, a first for Palm (a few tricks Palm learnt from Handspring's Treo products?).

Though the Tungsten C is slightly larger and thicker than the Tungsten T, that's easily excused because of the extra features, the super-powerful CPU, and the addition of a thumb board. It uses an extremely powerful battery at 1500mAH, way more than most handhelds like iPaqs and the new Palm handhelds, which keeps it alive and kicking for more than ten hours of actual usage and more than five days of standby time even with WiFi enabled.

The Tungsten C uses the new high-resolution Transreflective 320 x 320 pixel TFT display, which is way better, brighter and sharper than the Tungsten T's, and is miles ahead of anything on the iPaqs and the Dells. The only other displays that manage to come close to this are the ones on the new Sony Handhelds like the NR80V and the UX50.

Those who are Graffiti freaks would be happy to know that the new Graffiti 2 system lets you write anywhere on the screen, and is a whole lot easier to use and learn than Graffiti 1. Those who despise graffiti will be happy because this PDA comes with an excellent thumb keyboard. Despite being a graffiti expert, I have to agree that it is a whole lot easier and faster to use a proper keyboard instead. The keyboard design for the Tungsten C reminds one of the Handspring Treo 90, as the layout and functionality is almost identical, and extremely easy to use. I was able to thumb away a 600-word article in less than 40 minutes while standing in a packed Mumbai local train. How's that for mobile productivity?

Our only complaint with this otherwise unbeatable handheld is that it doesn't come with a standard 1/8" headphone jack. It would've been great if Palm had provided a stereo headset connector, that would've made this handheld an absolute killer gaming and mobile video handheld. Instead, it comes with a Nokia 8310 type headset jack that allows you to connect a mobile phone type handsfree kit with a built-in microphone. You can easily find single-ear as well as both-ear headphones for this connector in the local market. You can play and record voice memos by clicking a button on the headset; you can play MP3s, games and you will hear crystal clear and loud sound on the headset, the only negative being it is mono sound.

Though you don't have built-in Bluetooth, that's not much of an issue as you have WiFi built-in, and can always pop in a SDIO Bluetooth card into the SD/MMC/SDIO expansion slot on top. The slot will also accept both SD and MMC memory cards.

The handheld comes with a leather flip-cover to protect the screen, a nice metal stylus that rests easy and firmly on the right side of the handheld, and a standard Palm USB hot sync cradle.

Your article is good. But to say that PocketPC based devices are slow, sluggish, and awkward reveals the author has not worked on a Pocket PC 2002 device before. I own a Dell Axim X5 unit and i find a MS-based device surprisingly easy to use and it conserves RAM like a rabid dog. I work on Excel, play MP3 songs, and am downloading the mail at the same time, without any loss in performance or hiccups. I have 5 ways if inputting text/drawings in a Pocket PC rather than single way graffitti in Palm. I also own a Palm IIIxe which now lies in a dust heap. Before writing a fullsome praise of any product, make sure you have checked out other options "personally" before voicing your cliche opinions.

hi, with regard to memory management let me assure you that the palm uses less memory tha the windows ce platform. a palm with 32 mb ram can store the equivalent of 64 mb of ram for a windows ce device. addtiionally it the palm o/s does not crash like the windows ce o/s. comparing palm IIIxe to your dell axim is like comparing an ambassador to a honda city. so lets make a meaningful comparison of your axim with an equivalent palm device a proud palm owner/ t3

Of course you want to interact with an MS device. All dumbos do. You are so full of it :- stability, multitasking, low footprint, low RAM usage. MS has everything, right ? Even their full OS running on the latest computers didn't have true multitasking after a decade of working on it. We used to run 16 bit non-multitasking , unstable software on our PC's.

Well I have worked on both toshiba PPC and own a Tungsten E. i feel that when it comes to bells and whistles PPC wins but when it comes to productivity, stability, support, application availability, expandability, ease of use, vast developer network, features Palm Tunsgten series and the Zire 71 beats PPC to pulp. BTW Palm IIIxe is so old a model that even palm does not support it Please for god's sake stop comparing it with PPC 2002

I've used a total of seven handhelds till date, out of them, four were Pocket PC/WinCE handhelds, from WinCE v. 1 to the latest Windows Mobile 2003...and take my word when I say memory management, stability, and multitasking flexibility on Windows PPC SCKUS so bad, I won't want to move back to Windows ever again after having used my Palm OS 5 Clie.

Hi, I'm interested in a Dell Axim X5 with Pocket PC 2002. Could you brief me how to purchase one.

Ajesh | Bangalore | 07/03/05 09:22 AM | Report abuse

I am desperately looking for Axim X51v. I am in Chennai. But everyone's saying that Dell PDAs are to be got ONLY from Dell website, but Dell India site has no pdas listed and the helpline don't have any idea about PDA sales. Where do you guys usually buy DELL PDAs? Thanks in advance.
