Online Video Libraries: A Quick Glance

Online Video Libraries: A Quick Glance

RMV Simha, Apr 22, 2007 1303 hrs IST

D for Delta, V for Victory, D for Dumbass. If spelling out 'most wanted' DVD titles to your dumb movie walla makes you sick, here's a band-aid.

As I went through these sites on a Sunday afternoon, I realised that while all of them offer free delivery and pick up(even in Andheri East), let you pay be cheque if you are squeamish about revealing your credit card details, magnanimously waive away late fees. They do have one fundamental problem: they are nowhere close to the reputed brick and mortar libraries collections. And they are light years away from netflix or blockbuster, the international sites. I ran a check for an amazingly funny movie called Waking Ned Devine on all of the sites and none of them have it. Yet, I can guarantee that all the reputed brick and mortar guys have had this title since 2004.

My suggestion is that if you live close to a reputed B&M, sign up, even if you are going to be paying a hefty security deposit. Nothing beats the fun of browsing through titles, reading the jackets and having a chat about the movie with the chap behind the counter. And the chances are that if you ask for The Dinner Game, you won't be met with a blank stare or a scratch of the head.

If you have to join an online library, I was personally comfortable with Clixflix.com. They have a far better collection of movies than any of the others, they let me access my store membership from their site, accepted cash and issued a receipt. I was also pretty content with Catchflix.com. They are the only blokes who have completely waived away the security deposit and seem to be pretty enthusiastic sending you emails about their new releases, the movies you have booked and are now available and all that sort of thing.

The DVD revolution has been the biggest possible blessing for movie buffs and online libraries can make this revolution even more significant as the international online DVD libraries have shown. The online DVD libraries in India have made a decent beginning and it is pretty certain that many more will jump into the fray. A few weeks back there was a story about a Nimbus bigwig starting a chain of libraries that would deliver a movie in 30 minutes, or your money back. Till these grandiose plans materialize, there is absolutely nothing wrong in becoming a member of the existing libraries and checking out their deals.

After all, they do deliver in Andheri East.

Downloading movies is costly, Coz internet in India is costly. At 256kbps, we can download 1-2 GB daily (non-stop) and the cost per day for net comes to around INR 40. i.e. We get 2-3 DVDRips (700MB each) in 40 bucks. Why not get 2 DVDs in 33 bucks and enjoy an excellent Quality. You can dump ur DVDs on HD or write DVDs urself.

Looks like u haven't browsed through the DVD Library sites. In some plans u can get 2 or more DVDs at a time and everyday u can order new sets... So 60+ DVDs per month... And that's a huge number ;-)
