O2 XDA IIi
Aalaap Ghag Email Print
Jun 20, 2005
Large screen, Bluetooth, WiFi, MMC/SDIO slot for expansion, 128MB memory, decent performance and battery life
May be a bit big to use as a phone, not easy to get the ear placement right, can't send files via Bluetooth directly, camera performance is just OK

O2's XDA II remains the choice of the business user whose focus is more on the bigger screen and PDA functionality. In its latest incarnation, the XDA IIi looks exactly the same as its predecessor XDA II, but adds a few key features in an effort to update the now ageing model.

Beginning with the form factor - even though it can almost easily be mistaken for the earlier IIs, its different from the IIs in that it has fewer buttons on the front, is smaller than the IIs, and has no slide out keyboard. If you do a lot of typing, you'll be quite ireful about having only the on-screen keyboard or the cumbersome handwriting options.

The PDA is 13cm high, 7cm wide and 1.87cm thick. It's pretty heavy at 210g, but then again I'm speaking from a phone point of view. The IIi's large QVGA (240x320) screen more than makes up for the inconvenience caused while walking around with it in your pocket, but once again, its more likely to be a Louis Phillipe or Allen Solly than a Levi or Pepe.

While talking, we experienced the same problem we had with the 7710 - getting the earpiece to align with the ear correctly. Since the phone is quite wide, you can't instinctively put it and expect the two to align instantly. You'll probably take a while to get used to, but I probably won't.

The IIi is powered by an Intel PXA272 processor running at 520MHz with 128 MB of RAM and ROM to play around with, which is quite a lot, even though the memory available to the user out of the box is around 60mb. The phone is tri-band GSM (900/1800/1900) and GPRS Class 10 compliant.

The screen is a 3.5-inch QVGA (240x320) screen that has up to 65k colors. I'm the one to usually say more than 65k colors on a 320x240 screen is a little pointless, but the big 3.5 inch size screen on the IIi could seriously have looked a lot better with 262k colors.

The phone has Infrared, Bluetooth and also WiFi but its only 802.11b, not g. Since 802.11g is fast gaining popularity, we feel it would have been a wiser decision to include support for both. Incidentally, there's an SDIO slot that can probably be used to upgrade to a future WiFi standard if required. There's also a USB connection option.

The integrated camera is now 1.3 megapixels, a much coveted upgrade from the VGA (640x480) cameras that somehow still make it into higher end devices these days. The camera performed well outdoors, but low light conditions can produce too many grainy pictures. The shutter speed of the camera also requires you to stand and hold the device firmly when taking pictures, or you'll get motion blur. There was no way to beam files out of the phone via Bluetooth, with the only option being to use the included ActiveSync software.

The IIi runs Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 2nd Edition, which provides a familiar Windows interface and intuitivity, along with a huge array of software titles just waiting to be downloaded. Right out of the box, it comes with pocket versions of Microsoft Office applications, namely Word, Excel and also Internet Explorer and MSN Messenger or the MSN client. It also ships with ClearVue PDF and PowerPoint viewers.

There's Windows Media Player for music, but the phone has no loud speaker for the music playback. It has a 2.5mm stereo audio jack, so you can hook in the headphones and listen to music. While making calls however, there is a loudspeaker option available - just hold down the green call key for a couple of seconds and it comes on.

The IIi comes with a 1300 mAH Li-Ion battery that offers you around 4 hours of talk time and around 170 hours of stand by time (around 7 days). When in PDA or Flight mode, you can expect around 15 hours of using just the organizer functions.

At Rs. 47,000 MRP, this is seriously expensive stuff and is only going to be worth it if you're a businessman or woman in need of proper PDA functionality along with a phone, camera and stuff like that. For slightly less demanding users, the i-Mate Jam or the XDA Mini may be better options to look at.
