Nvidia GeForce 9600GT

A worthy successor to the GT name, we say

Next Page

Just four months after the release of one of their most successful GeForce 8-series cards, the 8800GT, Nvidia launched its G94-based GeForce 9-series -- yesterday -- without much fanfare. Unlike the previous generation that started with the most powerful card in the line-up, Nvidia has this time started at the middle with the 9600GT, a supposed successor to the 8600GT/GTS.

Now, there has been a lot of speculation and rumours about the performance of the 9600GT. But before we talk about performance, let's see what the new GPU, the G94, has to offer.

The G94

Designed using a 65nm fabrication process to fit on small power-efficient graphics cards, this GPU allows the stream processors to run at 1625 MHz, a 20% improvement over the first-generation stream processors found on the GeForce 8800 GTX. Equipped with 64 stream processors, the GPU can operate more efficiently and requires fewer transistors. To add to the boost given to the shaders, the texture engine has bee fitted with double addressing capabilities, allowing for 8 bilinear addresses to be calculated and 8 texels filtered per cycle.

Nvidia claims that these architectural improvements enable the 9600 GT to perform better than a 64-stream processor version of the GeForce 8800 GTX. They also say that in real-world performance, a pair of GeForce 9600 GT cards can outperform a single GeForce 8800 GTX. Let's verify that last claim a little later; for now, let's see what height a single 9600GT can scale.

I seriously doubt if TT is even reviewing all these Cards!! They might just be copying scores from thousands of other Hardware review sites! There is never a screenshot! Never a recent game! Now who would send them a pre-release(whatever its called) card????

by YourDad, YourHome, on Feb 24, 2008 11:45 PM, Report abuse

Its still a DX 10 card. It would not play DX 10.1 games. A review between this and ATI 3850/3870 card (even though these are DX 10.1 compatible) would have been really appreciated.

by Chandra, Chennai, on Feb 23, 2008 05:41 PM, Report abuse   Reply

A valid point... Word coming in is that the 9600GT is on par with the 3870... AMD has reduced prices of the 3870 to 189$, which makes it on par with this... A comparison please.

DX 10.1 and 10 doesn't have much difference. There won't be any problem playing DX 10.1 games on DX 10 cards. It is just a small update on DX 10. No major game would lack DX 10 support.

by majums, Kolkata, on Feb 24, 2008 07:28 PM, Report abuse

Agreed that there is not much difference between 10 & 10.1 but isnt it better to buy a card that supports 10.1 coz the cards that support only 10 will have to be phased out soon.

i completely agree with the reviews....

Do you guys have only these old games to test. Why not conduct review under latest games like crysis, call of duty 4 etc which require a lot of resouces.

What do all these bars mean...you guys should just tell us is it better than the 8800 or worse....

by The_Big_Dog, Kolkata, on Feb 23, 2008 11:55 AM, Report abuse   Reply

its a review man not a simple yes or no...but here : 8800gt > 9600gt > 8600 gt/gts

by Puneet, mumbai, on Feb 23, 2008 04:54 PM, Report abuse

well, for its price, it is better than an 8800 since you could get two 9600 for the price of a 8800! booyeah!

by Anonymous, c, on Feb 23, 2008 05:21 PM, Report abuse

Buy 9600 GT at aggressive price of Gigabyte around 12k better than best.

ONLY CRYSIS BECNHMARK WAS ENOUGH.. LOL.. U GUYS ARE POSTING SOME OTHER WEBSITE SCORE OR WHAT.

by NADEEM, PUNE, on Feb 23, 2008 09:07 AM, Report abuse   Reply

These benchmarks are all quite old, to the point that they can't be called benchmarks anymore. I'm also surprised that the best benchmark out there now - Crysis - is not included in the tests. Shows how much TT's quality has slipped recently.

by rohith10, Thiruvananthapuram, on Feb 23, 2008 03:40 AM, Report abuse   Reply

Sorry, I just saw the sentence on Crysis in the Conclusion area. TT should rather put it in the graph. Anyway, all the remaining benchmarks are way too dated, IMO.

i ahve this card and the 8800GTX is wayy better
