Here's a list of features that got me to try out Notepad X.
Tabbed Interface
Just like Opera or Firefox have tabbed browsing interface, Notepad X supports it as well. It goes without saying that working with tabs is comfortable. A tabbed interface helps you work with many .TXT files in one window, saving space on your Windows taskbar instead of clustering it with many windows.
Switch between Tabs
Unfortunately, this doesn't switch between tabs the way I'd want it to. Generally with most browsers, "Tab" and "Shift + Tab" for "Next tab" and "Previous tab" are the defaults. Although in Notepad X, the shortcuts are provided, but they're currently not functional since the program is still in the development stages and is not the final release.
Rich Text Formation
Notepad X provides you with a Rich Text Formation toolbar. The toolbar is very similar to the one seen in Word, but is a much stripped down version. It consists of the following buttons -- Bold, Italics, Underline, Strikeout, Left Align, Center Align, Right Align, Bullets, Font, Font Color, and Insert Image.
These are too little, but then this is better than the basic facilities that a simple Notepad offers. In standard Notepad, one change to the text formation will lead to the change in the entire matter but here you can even format just a word or a portion of the text. That is in relation with the font and the color as well as the adding bullets and text alignment.

I must say, Notepad++ is much more flexible and even has support for a number of programming languages and its open source. But, the Best feature of all is that its really light weight and does not rely on the .Net framework

Why would you look for anything else when you have Notpad++? Its open source and has so many features that you will love it at first sight. http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net

LOL.. i use TextPad, Textpad is better, it has super features than notepad + it has support for C++, java, etc. Languages.

I believe the prerequisite of .NET Framework 2.0 shouldn't be considered as a disadvantage... There are numerous softwares out there which run on the .NET Framework and so is with Java Run Environment. It makes no sense to consider that as a negative point.

NoteTab Light is a much better freeware which has multiple tabs with easy movement between them, Regular Expression usage in searches across all open documents, programmable clips etc.

What you're reviewing at is a replacement for Wordpad, not Notepad. That's like comparing apples and oranges. If you want a true replacement for notepad, you can't beat metapad from http://www.liquidninja.com/metapad/

Notepad rocks because of its minimalism. So if you talk about a 'replacement' you can hardly pass off a multiwindowed rich text supporting editor that requires installation and .NET as one. The best notepad replacement I've seen is Notepad2- Available at http://www.flos-freeware.ch/notepad2.html This does not require any installation is just one EXE, and it supports syntax coloring among its features. (It's not multiwindow)
